Forcasting ground level wind for the bay is difficult at best. Alot depends on when/where the fog clears and when/where the land heats up. Also what direction the wind off the ocean comes thru the gaps in the mountains. It also blows different directions in the morning vs afternoon. Upperlevel winds can come to the surface unexpectedly, in some locations but not others. The mountains also alter the direction of the winds drasticly.

Look at avation wind charts, the wind blows at completely different directions at different elevations. Hot air baloonists can often drift back
to their origional starting point by changing their elevation.

The difference between good sailing and skunked is often only a few knots. The best forcasters at the NWS often say 10-25kts. Well,,if it blows 10 they're right!! If it blows 25 they're still right!! This is not Kansas flatland, where you can see the storm coming for miles.

I've been adicted to Mike Godsey's forecast for years and take it for what it is: a (very) educated guess. For telling you whether it will blow a little or a lot- the forecast is like a coin toss. Where it shines, however, is telling us that the entire bay will be fog or we're in for a heat wave. Go or no go in other words. Then you can leave the WS junk in the garage and go play tennis after work.

If you are like me and (in the past anyway) travel westbound over the bay bridge to TI and Crissy to find wind, the following webcam atop the toll plaza will tell you what sort of back up to expect. Weekend afternoons can be gridlock.
