Can anyone give me some feedback on the Virginia Beach area? Is it a nice town like Andy Griffith Mayberry or a rough one like Detroit. Also, what is the windsurfing like around there or does everyone just pack up and drive down to Hatteras.

Definately not like Detroit. All information regarding sailing from the Richmond Va post applies here, the difference is all the sailing spots are within a half hour drive and Hatteras is only 2.5 hrs away.

If you consider moving here, and can break away from the job every now and then to sail locally for a few hours you're in good shape. This is my scenario and I got to go sail maybe 40 sessions this year, despite job constraints. Some make trips to Hatteras more often than others. Find local launches on windvisions.com.
If you plan a vacation, then yes, I'd certainly recommend Hatteras.

Ok, sounds like the sailing is pretty good and the proximity to Outter Banks is real good. Now, what it the town like? Sleepy small town with a lot of nice old homes or bunch of tract homes that all look alike. I believe that this is a military town so I don't expect a lot of crime. However, I could be mistaken. Thanks for all the feedback.

Yes crime rate seems to be decently low. On one hand the local media hype everything they can find, OTOH the City tries to sweep as much under the carpet they can in order to create a family friendly image for the ocean front tourism industry. I feel safe anywhere I go, which excludes areas with payday loan shops. Note VA Beach is the biggest "town" in Virginia both in population and size, and we have seven cities in our metro area (Hampton Roads). Second most populous city in VA is Chesapeake, which is right next to us. So is Norfolk.

The scenery is distinctly suburban. No old homes, the shingles would get blown off by the Superhornets operating out of Ocean Naval Air Station. Not many high rise buldings either except for the ocean front hotels and town center. Mc Mansions here and there but nothing obscene as can be found around Houston (so I'm told). Traffic is kindofaproblem when you have to cross the water to Hampton or Portsmouth. If you arrange your life around VA-Beach-Chesapeake-Norfolk you'll be just fine; it's not nearly as bad as NoVA which is a hopeless case.

We have a lot fo good windsurfing in the local area. Check out http://www.windvisions.com/Hatteras/hatteras_launches.html for a nice interactive map.

We mostly sail here but often make day trips to Hatteras. Lot's of options here.

VA Beach is sounding better and better. Was thinking of upgrading my equipment to a new set of Exocet Cross II (106L and 84L). Is this a good range for the area for a 185 pounder. You guys rule with all the feedback...

We have guys here who have nothing bigger than a 100l board. Then... like anywhere else in the real world; East Coast anyway... if you want to get some decent water time, consider getting a 130l and a 8.5 or even a longboard like a Kona to round off your quiver for those 10-15 teaser days, like today. Really nice out this morning, blowing 15-20 around Cape Henry, *just* not quite enough for a 100l board and a 6.0.

How's the fishing? Is it worthwhile to own a boat to go out and do some trolling or drift fishing or are all the game fish so far out you need a 50' Sport Fishing boat to get to them and live to tell the tale.

I don't fish... I get some nice filets from friends who do every now and then, but I suppose game fishing would be out of Oregon and Hatteras Inlets on Hatteras Island.
