In my post, I used the term swell, so I guess Ed was referring to the first post. Waves to me mean breaking as well.

I meant logo-high in the approx. 11ft. sense, probably higher at times. I wouldn't have believed it myself if I hadn't been there and watched my friends disappear behind the swell in front of me. I looked at the wind archives for 3rd for Superbowl Sunday, 2003 (Feb. 1, I assume). June 5, 2005 was windier. In addition, it blew all day the day before and through the night. It wasn't necessarily pretty sailing, but it was an unforgettable day for 3rd. If you don't believe it, you probably weren't there.

Interestingly enough, I have not found the highest ebb currents to correlate with the largest swell. I don't know exactly what current condition does generate the biggest swell, but it appears that just under one knot is best.

I kayak as well as windsurf, with windsurfing getting the nod 90% of the time. There are highly skilled kayakers who can paddle in crazy wind, and they are often helping us in preserving access.

I think vadler is correct. I was also sailing 3rd that day and swell was huge. Not sure on height but I have never seen it that high before or since. Was a crazy day.
