There is a shop there and they have board storage right on the water. It is Extreme Windsurfing - talk to Jim the owner, tell him Linda from Baltimore sent you. Here is the web site www.extremewindsurfing.com
There are several places to sail on LI but the traffic is really bad and you just might be better off coming south. Lakes Bay usually blows more than anywhere else. Hope to see you on the water.
Good Luck. |
Linda, it's great to advocate for locations you like, but saying "the traffic is really bad and you just might be better off coming south" is not very helpful. NYC windsurfers regularly drive to any number of locations offering conditions from shallow flatwater to chop to waves on Long Island faster than they can make it to Lakes Bay. There are several good spots that are reachable in an hour or less. Getting to Lakes Bay in two hours would be making good time.
I have no doubt that Lakes Bay has much to offer...tout that! But please don't diss what you don't really know.
(anyone looking for a collection of sailing spots on Long Island can check out the map here: http://peconicpuffin.typepad.com/the_peconic_puffin/2006/12/windsurfing_pec.html It's incomplete but still paints a fairly good picture of the options on Long Island.) |

I manage to get out to Hecksher in my 1991 Honda Civic Hatchback. Will trade ride for jibing lesson. I am ready to toss it all in for a kite!

Not a kite!
When do you usually go? I'll happily try and lend some help with jibes (I have my own ride.)
