South Padre Island (SPID) is good in Oct-Dec and Apr-Jun. In the fall they average 12 days/month above 20MPH and 21 days/month above 15MPH. In the fall they also get the Norther blows which can really howl up to 40+ MPH for a day or two at a time. Phillip Money at Windsurf Inc has a nice setup with rental gear and a private launch. |

Define wind. If that includes upper teens, youll love it. If youre talking 6.0 stuff, youll need some luck and fronts. It also depends on how much time you want to sail.

From what Ive experienced living in Corpus Christi for the past few years, some of the other comments posted here might be confusing. SPID is actually the highway that goes through Corpus (called South Padre Island Drive). SPI, on the other hand, is South Padre Island, 3 hours south. Corpus has flat water in the Laguna Madre (including Bird Island), which if you do freestyle is most definitely not strictly old folks sailing. The bay has chop/small swell, and the Gulf usually has waves around 3-4 feet Id say, when its blowing 20-25. Its side on unless there is a front, when its side or side off. We have a nice new jetty that makes it possible to sail with a few less MPH than necessary in the past. This has been an unusually un-windy summer, so hopefully that trend wont continue into the fall. My favorite part about fall in Corpus is when hurricanes generate overhead waves...but of course thats too unpredictable to plan a vacation around. SPI tends to have a bit bigger, cleaner waves and more current than Corpus. For a sure bet spring is best, but we still probably average a few planing days a week in the fall (my largest gear is 5.2/78L). check the laguna shores sensor archives on IW for the most accurate reading in corpus. I sail a ton here but have had to taper off temporarily due to grad school. hope you can make it sometime. |

Definitely go to South Padre Island and not Corpus. I lived on SPI for 15 years, before moving to the Bay Area, and it is a more pristine marine environment than Corpus. April and May are best because you get south and north winds. November through March is mostly north wind but you do get some south winds. The last several winters have had many more south wind days than usual. The best wave sailing is in the fall when the water is warmest. The jetties on SPI have the best wave sailing on the entire Gulf of Mexico. As with most places, if you go for one week, getting skunked is always a possibility. |
