Regarding puget sound sailing... summer winds are generally light and only occasionally good enough for big gear and light north winds (ie, my 8.5m sail which I walk to the sound near 3-tree point where I live). Purdy is more of a fall/winter storm spot which works in post-frontal sw winds. There a lots of good fall/winter places near seattle. Check out this site which lists many of them: home.earthlink.net/~crzybdhd/wind/wa-sites/purdy.html

Excellent summary. I lived in Portland for three years before I returned to the Bay Area and my experience of the Gorge was real hit and miss. When it blew, it was awesome. But given I had to drive an hour at least to sail, I got easily frustrated when the wind would not cooperate. I have a 4 year old and I really hate wasting my time waiting for or chasing wind.

Now that Im back in the Bay Area, my delima is the same, expect Im in Berkeley and have two sites 5-10 minutes away with several others under an hour away.

Net-net: You can live in any windsurfing location, but it still comes down to location, location, location.

Hey mike sometimes better to let them dislike the gorge. Its crowded enough. On 4th of july I had to share my swell with 5 others. On a normal day there would have just 2 others. BTW got skunked at newport on saturday. Should not have believed the forecast. No wind on friday was a big clue. Its ok if they stay home.
