Hi Everyone,
Thanks for the info on my previous questions on the Gorge. But I forgot to ask about good hotels and camping. Any info would be great.
Thanks.

I slept in my van in the Gorge >1200 nights
between 1988 and 1999 (moved here in 99, dont need to camp as often) without every paying a cent except for some public showers now and then. You can find decent spots just by asking around, or spend time, as I did, finding some great spots. A lot depends on what you have to camp in and how invisible it is. Motor home? Just sleep at Walmart. Ordinary-looking van, especially white with Acme Plumbing on the side? Sleep anywhere you blend in. Its not a piece of cake, since many wild spots have been closed off, but ita dooable at first, and better as you learn more.

Try Tucker Creek Campground a few miles north of Hood River (Im posting this from there over wireless right now) Try and arive on a weekday though since it fills quickly on the weekends.
Dont know about hotels, but there are quite a few in Hood River.
If you get a no wind day a trip to Portland is probably a good bet. Check out the Chinese and Japanese gardens. If the wife like shopping shell be in heaven (no tax).

Forget about a cheap hotel in Hood RIver, they dont exist. The cheapest in town is probably Praters, but its a dump, and usually booked solid anyway.
But there are lots of places to camp, availability depends on how much infrastucture you need. Any old rental car can make it a good way up into Post Canyon, Fir Mountain, or Middle mountain, youll have total solitude, and perfectly free camping. Of course, you have to take everything with you, its not like KOA or something.
BTW, Tucker Park is a few miles SOUTH of Hood River. North is the river, then Washington. |

| Viento is a great campground with good sailing access. At Windance, Info Source, Links, Vacations. You will find listings for all the campgrounds and lodging throughout the Gorge. |

Check out the Bingin School Inn just across the Hood River Bridge in Bingin, WA. The rooms range from a Hostel type dorm, 10 nights for $100, or private rooms for about $40. They have a common cooking and gathering area, tv etc. Most guests are windsurfers and other outdoor types. http://www.bsi-cgoc.com
Have fun, Gary |

There are so many good hotels for camping like Hood River Hotel, Hood River Hotel, Inn of the White Salmon & Columbia Gorge Hotel. In these hotels some are the riverfront hotels. It makes it convenient to a number of good area dining options.
