If your try get on foil before you have enough board speed, the foil will stall, and the board will slap back down on the water. Like dllee said, if you do not need to pump to get on foil, you will most likely be overpowered once up on the foil.
Just like windsurfing. The guys that turn down wind and pump the sail are always the first to get on a plane and head up wind. The nice thing about foiling is any distance lost downwind in a turn or getting going on foil, is very easy to make up once you are up on foil. You might need to try different positions of your foil in the track to find the sweet spot of lift vs, balance fore and aft.

I have been going about the pumping all wrong. Have focus on trying to increase speed and stay up wind.
I have also experienced flying without pumping and then being overpowered.
Thanks all, for the information. Now all I need is some wind.

Had some light wind yesterday (12 - 18 mph) and had a chance to try the advice I received. Found that I was on foil and comfortable with 5.3 rig.

Thanks' everyone.
