I haven't for foils (still fin only here) but I'll chime in with my experience as an engineer using lock-nuts in marine applications.

Please note that lock-nuts do NOT prevent the nut from loosening up if it's not properly sized/preloaded!! It simply prevents the nut from completely working it's way off the bolt or stud threads.

In other words, lock nuts are a band-aid to a bigger problem - the fastener is being loaded so much during use that the parts it's holding together are moving! Fixing the root problem is the preferred option, if possible.

That said, there are three basic kinds of locking nuts that rely on friction to prevent the nut from disappearing when it comes loose:

"Distorted thread" are basically just regular nuts that have been squished a bit so they're out of round, and the threads interfere.

"Flex-top" have a special little flange at the top that does a similar thing to the distorted thread nuts, and provide a metal-to-metal bite.

"Nylon insert" are like the flex-top, but use a piece of nylon that rubs against the male threads to create the friction.

With stainless steel hardware, galling of the threads is a serious problem, even when anti-seize is used properly. Because of this, I'm not keen on using the two type of lock nuts that rely on metal-to-metal friction; the risk of galling is a LOT higher. Instead, nylocs are the way to go, as the nylon won't gall against the male threads.

All of these will wear down, and the friction created by the locking method will become weaker and weaker with each removal and re-installation; if you're disassembling your foil on a regular basis, you'll want to have a supply of fresh hardware on hand.

Its just a system to hold the foil nuts in a set position in the track to make mounting the foil easier.

Some guys stuff plastic under the nuts to hold them in place.
On offset opening tracks, leave the screw and nuts on foil mast base, loosen them, align them, drop 2 in at a time.
On centered, takes longer, so you place 2 nuts in, drop in the other 2, nut need to align the 1st two for the screws.

Ah, that makes sense! Just use some nylocs and be done with it, assuming there's space for the increased nut height.

Also look into these particular washers. These really work. Made in Sweden so there is a price too them and they are not Pennie's.

You can get small quantities on eBay and Amazon. Both metric and standard sizes.
