Latest outlook on Coronavirus on our side of the pond, by members of S.A.G.E. ( Government advisory experts.) Prof John Edmunds spells it out as he sees it.
"Coronavirus will be around for evermore. The U.K. can expect tens of thousands of deaths from the second wave in what is a bleak situation. If you look at where we are now there is no way we can come out of this second wave without counting our deaths in tens of thousands."
That is likely a worst case scenario, and they may just be covering their backsides, so he went on, "The U.K. has played a clever game in investing in different Coronavirus 19 vaccines (the main one of which is the Oxford University vaccine currently in the final test stages) by signing deals for six different leading vaccines."
He reckons this second wave now out of control in most of Europe and the U.K., will peak by Christmas with a severe number of cases, with hundreds of deaths a day occurring, but the vaccines available by next spring should make a big difference."
He tells it how he sees it (as do the other members of S.A.G.E.) thankfully free of ridiculous political posturing, and point scoring. Considering practically the whole of Europe is facing the same out of control problem he could hardly do otherwise! |

| GT—I fear you are right. Despite highly effective and safe vaccines, and an international effort that has reduced infections by over 99% since 1988, polio is still with us, with 22 cases in 2017 and paranoia both about vaccines and those who administer them. With the burgeoning population encroaching on wild spaces, it is only a matter of time until another animal virus crosses to humans. Our political systems seem to be wired to do nothing until problems reach a critical stage—which is fatal with a pandemic that spreads on an exponential scale. |

From the Atlantic, on the reasons for resistance to vaccination, and what it means since a whole lot of people will need to get vaccinated, and the vaccines will have to be very good for it to work.

All of us, that is, except for people like Marcus Nel-Jamal Hamm. Hamm, a Black actor and professional wrestler, is what some might call an “anti-vaxxer,” though he finds that term derogatory and reductive. Since about 2013, he’s been running a Facebook page called “Over Vaccination Nation,” which now has more than 3,000 followers. One recent post is a video by the anti-vaccinationist Robert F. Kennedy Jr., wrongly suggesting that mercury-laced vaccines are shipped to predominantly Black communities.
Hamm’s wariness of vaccines began when he took his son, who is now 10, to get vaccinated as a baby. He asked the pediatrician whether the boy could be exempted from the standard vaccine schedule because he has relatives with multiple sclerosis and autism. According to Hamm, the doctor treated him like a criminal just for asking.
The experience left Hamm in a fog of unanswered questions: Do doctors have a quota of vaccines they have to fulfill? Why do some kids have bad reactions to vaccines? Is there something they’re not telling us? He started to distrust the accepted wisdom about vaccines, doubting that the official narrative is the true one.
Today, Hamm believes the pharmaceutical industry is corrupt, and that it’s attempting to spin up a coronavirus vaccine too quickly. (The latter is a worry of the scientific community too, stoked by President Donald Trump’s ceaseless chatter about having a vaccine ready before Election Day—and the very name of the government’s vaccine project, Operation Warp Speed.) Though Hamm fears contracting COVID-19, when the coronavirus vaccine becomes available, he intends to avoid getting immunized. |

The presidential campaign was roiled this weekend by a fresh outbreak of the novel coronavirus at the White House that infected at least five aides or advisers to Vice President Pence, a spread that President Trump’s top staffer acknowledged Sunday he had tried to avoid disclosing to the public.
With the election a little over a week away, the new White House outbreak spotlighted the administration’s failure to contain the pandemic as hospitalizations surge across much of the United States and daily new cases hit all-time highs.
The outbreak around Pence, who chairs the White House’s coronavirus task force, undermines the argument Trump has been making to voters that the country is “rounding the turn,” as the president put it at a rally Sunday in New Hampshire. |

When he called the White House about a coronavirus outbreak, the Indiana doctor expected to get some help, not a “head in the sand approach.”
It was Oct. 1, and Mark Fox, a county public health officer in South Bend, had just learned that the University of Notre Dame’s president, the Rev. John I. Jenkins, had tested positive for the novel coronavirus after attending a Rose Garden ceremony days earlier in honor of Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett. It seemed likely that either Jenkins had taken the virus to the White House, potentially infecting others there, or he had become infected in Washington and brought the virus home to South Bend.
There are long-standing protocols for investigating the spread of a virus: contact tracing, or interviewing infected people about their recent interactions and advising those exposed that they should get tested. There’s also a more cutting-edge technology that can map the spread of a virus by tracking tiny changes in its genetic code. The Trump administration did not effectively deploy either technique in response to what Anthony S. Fauci, the nation’s top infectious-disease specialist, has called a “superspreader event” at the White House, leaving not just the president and his family and staff at risk, but also the hundreds of people who were potentially exposed.
Officials say the White House called off early efforts to get to the bottom of the outbreak, including sequencing the genomes of virus samples from infected individuals. This genetic analysis could have revealed shared mutations that linked cases in Washington and other affected communities.
Had the administration done such an investigation, it would know whether infections among aides to Vice President Pence that were reported this past weekend bore the same genetic signature as earlier cases at the White House. That could indicate whether the virus was circulating among administration officials for weeks or had slipped through infection-control measures a second time.
But the administration has shown little interest in investigating its outbreak, Fox said. He was initially told that the White House would send contact tracers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as part of a multistate investigation — and later learned they were asked to stand down. To this day, Fox, the local official tasked with contact tracing for the outbreak, has not seen a full list of people from his county who attended the Rose Garden ceremony.
“I have seen so many opportunities not just missed but cavalierly dismissed by this White House,” said Fox, citing the president’s travel even after learning he’d been in close contact with staff members who tested positive. “He failed to follow what in our county would have been really basic public health guidance.”
Fox’s frustration with the White House response isn’t unique. In Minnesota, after a Sept. 30 Trump visit, health officials sought the names of attendees at a private presidential fundraiser to see who might have been exposed to the president and staff members. The White House did not provide the requested information.
The day after the Rose Garden ceremony, Trump hosted some 25 families of U.S. military personnel killed in action. While at least one veterans organization supporting the event said it was contacted by the White House, several families were left on their own to prevent further spread, even after the president suggested that they may have given him the virus, according to veterans organizations.
It’s not clear how the president and several dozen others in his orbit contracted the coronavirus in early October. Was it at the celebration for Barrett, the event with Gold Star families or one of the other events Trump attended before announcing he had tested positive in the early hours of Oct. 2? Did the administration officials all become infected at the same time, or were they sickened by multiple strains of the virus on different occasions? Experts say vigorous contact tracing and a genetic investigation could answer these questions. But without these standard public health practices, it may never be known how widely the outbreak spread — or who was avoidably harmed. |

Google Covid long haulers and prepare to take the Coronavirus SERIOUSLY for a change. While other viruses make us sick and usually go away, medical professionals and Covid patients are starting to realize that this particular virus way too often causes long-lasting (maybe permanent), severe (as in disabling), often maybe untreatable harm, even in young and healthy asymptomatic people, to just about any and every system in our body. A few examples of such effects include severe fatigue, seriously impaired executive function (Google THAT and realize that it pretty much terminates any professional career), a variety of seriously crippling cardiovascular conditions, headaches, chronic gut-busting diarrhea, loss of balance, balding, dangerous blood pressure swings, widespread nerve damage (even to the nerves that control breathing and heartbeat and digestion, damage to lungs and kidneys, crippling muscle and joint pain, exercise (e.g. WINDSURFING) intolerance, and much more. A 19-yo Johns Hopkins University varsity cross country runner barely noticed his Covid until, months later, he couldn't walk a quarter mile. So far not even JH has been able to heal him.
Rare? No, fairly common ... anywhere from 10% to 80%. Only in the elderly? Um, is 19 "elderly"? Treatable? Not yet. Will get better with time? Not so far. Rumor? Not according to the CDC, Johns Hopkins, the WHO, and virus specialists throughout the world.
You know the drill: wash your hands; buy and wear and properly fit a REAL mask, not the loose-fitting paper throwaway garbage we buy at Walmart or the cloth fashion toys Pelosi buys from Gucci; shame people in public who won't wear a mask; stay the hell downwind of me at launch sites; and for God's and your family's sakes, don't throw big parties like my neighbor did Saturday night. Just because they're your friends and coworkers and children and nephews and nieces AND TEST NEGATIVE doesn't mean they can't cripple your kid or spouse for months or even permanently.
On this issue I gotta go with Biden rather than Trump, regardless of what their medical experts are telling them today. I'm staying home this winter, to give "them" more time to sort this all out.
It also makes me wonder just how many and how much of my symptoms are due to my cancer drugs vs my displaying many Covid symptoms shortly before we even heard of it. |

What happened to you calling people fear mongers and that COVID 19 was no worse than the flu? Your meds having an effect on your recollection? A decent person might offer up an apology. You? Probably not. |
