Trees ares marked for removal with a Red ribbon are
only some small locusts on the west end of
the sea wall.

The youth work corp has cleared
the shoreline from the jetty to
the east end.

A Blue ribbon marks many trees for
dead wood surgery.

Uprooted trees are not marked.

If a sledge hammer is required for this,
then a sledge hammer journeyman may be
required by the contract.

Feel free to apply.

What on earth is the Youth Work Corp, and how did they clear the park's eastern shoreline? A CGWA work party with USACE oversight tried years ago to clear that shoreline, contributing to several conclusions and questions:

1. It will require heavy machinery, as clearing just one bush (out of scores) with only hand tools took hours, as they seemed to consist of dozens of 1/2" steel cables. Even if more park users had shown up, we'd have made little progress and would have left a row of hundreds of punji sticks (because we are not allowed to break the ground plane lest we disturb an artifact.)

2. I'd love to hire this YWC for an overgrown part of our yard.

3. How did the YWC get around the danger and liability issues preventing us from saling, even walking, there?

4. Did the brush removal reveal a viable beach of sorts, or just piles of rocks?

5. Who are the privileged few individuals being allowed inside the park for fishing, taking pictures, eating lunch, etc.? How do I get on that precious list?

Good Quedtions

I can only tell you about the ckear view of the water
from the hosts site, not a close up view was seen.
I am Not on That list. besides the camp host is awesome
and it would be bad form to wander about AFTER the host
was kind and informative

The Host does not know what will become of
The Huge pile of debreis that is stack at theast end of the lawn

Obviously "$omeone" is pulling some strings.

From this we can get
Some Hope

Probably the same outcome as the last time a Corps contractor generated a similar pile: it sat right beside and partially on the trail to the upper/overflow parking lot, providing excellent rattlesnake habitat for years to come until I move the pile a bit off the trail. This time it sounds like the new pile is right where the Corps has directed the migrant workers to camp for the past few years.

Sorry for the cynicism, folks, but my wife and I have a combined history exceeding 50 years of working with the Corps, the BLM, the Wilderness Society, the Sierra Club, and a few other government and wanna-be-government agencies. They have tough jobs, seldom see things from the public's perspective, have very limited resources, and (often for the better) move like molasses in the Tundra.

Spoke with Corp Representative this week. He is estimated re-opening Roosevelt Park mid-August.

Mm, hmm.

First the inside story was "hopefully a week or two", then it was "early July", then "the first of August", now "mid August". I'll believe it when I see or hear first hand that the signs have been removed. Since Rosey wind is often very spotty from late summer towards Thanksgiving, and the south side of the river out there has often been getting the best wind much of this season (iW text forecast addresses that when appropriate), maybe it's time to figure out how to sail out of Arlington.

Just wondering if there's been any updates to this?
Thanks!

The cleanup contract has been awarded, with completion expected between mid-August and early Sept.

Not me:

The cleanup contract has been awarded, with completion expected between mid-August and early Sept. Until that contract has completed, the main park is closed to even foot traffic.

I talked with a kiter who had just arrived from Reno expecting to launch from Roosevelt. I advised him to follow this thread and the one titled Roosevelt Access for news of a confirmed reopening. Realize, though, that the usual park launch was been condemned last year by some excellent kiters as life-threatening due to intensive weed entanglement. One report from a WSer who had to make a main park emergency landing yesterday claims this year's weeds are ten times worse than last year.

I question that estimate, but even last year's weeds were a nightmare, and the Corps isn't going to help.
