Ended going with the Garmin Forerunner 310XT again. Refurbished. $74.95.

I set it up with the big display being the speed in knots, the little lower left display being the maximum peak speed (it was in mph and I could not get it to display knots) and the lower right displaying the time.

It is good for a 50 meter depth which I rarely go below.

I use a Garmin Forerunner 230, factory refurb for about $130, with the "Wind/Kite Surfing Datafield" free app by FIN151. It was basically the cheapest Garmin watch that supported downloading Connect IQ Apps. Had it for 4 years now, and it's been great. I use it for wavesailing, slalom sailing, surfing, and SUP. The app has the standard by 5x10sec windsurfing speed run tracking used for "official" speed measurements. It's fun to see the tracking on a map post session. And for surfing, I can get a real count of waves caught by looking at the speed vs. time graph. When a wave is caught, the speed goes from minimal to like 15-20mph for about 20-40sec, so I just count the peaks. This also works for slog-and-surf wavesailing; you can see when the graphed speed over time goes from about 5mph to the 20-25mph range.

Other apps that I have downloaded are a GPS waypoint navigation app (for finding buoys while fishing) and a triathlon app.

When surfing or wavesailing, I roll my wetsuit sleeve over the watch to prevent it from getting lost from a wristband failure. I usually don't look at it while on the water, except to check the time if needed.

Nice 6.0 and foil day at Berkeley Sat.
Just got up 4 times on the inside, so headed out to 10-18 mph outside in NW breeze. Bit powered past Ashby Shoals, and windchopped beyond my 70 foilmast. Alas, a longer mast in the future.

Easy 5.7 foiling day until 1:30 at Berk Monday, then wind drops to gusts of 12. Bit cold.

Happy 2020 to windward1 and everyone else on the forum.

A question for windward1- what were you using to track your historic windsurf conquest of the entire Santa Cruz coast, a standalone GPS or a smartwatch?

Anyone else GPS tracking their sailing? What do you use?

Thanks.

Also, heads up to everyone, this coming weekend has wind potential.

Apple Watch with the Dawn Patrol app works great for my sailing/surfing. Mine is the AW3 and it has taken a beating including wave sailing Baja. Get the cellular version and you can pretend to be in the office while sailing....
