I was doing a Google Map search of Barnegat Bay and was looking at a Streetview of the gate at Trixies. The gate was closed and there was a sign that it was closed due to Hurricane damage. Does anyone know if it has been reopened?

Yes the gate is now open and the park rebuilt but you can't really launch from inside the park. Most of the shoreline is covered with stone rip-rap to protect from erosion. But there is a large dirt lot on the south facing side of the peninsula just before the gate where everyone parks and launches from. Look for little pathways to the water between the tall weeds. Another northeast wind option is end of Laurel Blvd in Lanoka Harbor. Same conditions as Trixies with more wind exposure near shore.

Just another consideration. Trixies and the surrounding Bayfront areas will flood during prolonged northeast winds so often times roads get closed - especially out to Trixies. If the forecast holds - Thursday afternoon may be the window for good sailing as opposed to Friday.

What most windsurfers consider to be Trixies is the dirt parking lot (which is actually part of Berkeley Island County Park) directly across the street from Trixies marina. As Rob pointed out, this area of the park has been open for several years (it was closed for a few months after hurricane Sandy in 2012). The portion of the park at the tip of the penninsula was only recently reopened since the bathrooms and facilities down there were completely destroyed by the hurricane, but that was not where the windsurfers typically launched anyway.

Bottom line, windurfing is, and has been, open at Trixies for several years. I don’t recall ever experiencing major flooding issues on the access roads to Trixies, but during severe weather (if they declare a state of emergency) the gate to the park will not be opened. In that case, I’ve parked on the main road and just walked gear into the park and to the water.

Laurel Blvd and Allen Rd are other options, but in strong NE/E winds you and your car will get absolutely hammered by wind and spray as the parking is right on the edge of the water. In these conditions, Trixies will require a little upwinder to get into the bay, but you’ll also have some protection from the elements when not sailing.
