My current learner and lightwind setup:
Viper 240L and 48cm Fin.
Have a 7.5m sail and a 9m sail. Often seems there is a gap in the sizes. Too much or too little.
An 8 or 8.5 or some odd size?
Also until I'm good enough for Foiling; still interested in a 10 or 11. My board says it can handle up to an 11.
If the wind is light; and I can't plane with my 9m; will I be able to plane with the 10 or 11? Can enough fin be added to make it plane? |

longer fin is cheaper than another sail
you can adjust the sails with the outhaul - and a little bit with the downhaul
I go from 8.5 to 10 meter sails
in larger sails I use an adjustable outhaul
you can adjust on the fly ...
your board is wide I believe - Viper 240 is 91 cm wide
when winds are really light I prefer my much more narrow longboard
my wind minimum for my JP SLW92 is 12 knots with a 10-oh sail
butt I am over 200 pounds |

Where are the footstraps on your Fanatic? If you want to effectively use a jumbo sail and fin, you need to be able to put the straps pretty far back and out towards the rail. I don't think the newer model Fanatic Vipers let you do that, which may be why you can't get comfortable on it with your 9.0. If the 9.0 is not comfortable, a 10 or 11 will be worse.
I keep an older 220 liter / 85 cm wide Fanatic Viper at my folks house, and I've used it effectively with a 50 cm fin and 9.5 sail, but I think that's about the limit. It's kind of a "clunky" setup even with the outboard footstraps. _________________ James' Blog: Windsurfing Equipment Size Calculator

With good technique and tuning going 9.0 to 7.5 is a totally reasonable jump for a recreational sailor. |

Remind me of your weight?
Used to weigh 160lb/73kg and thought 8.7 would be a nice max size.
Then I would drop to 7.0.
Used 9.0, worked well, later 9.2 which started to be overkill really. _________________ *NEW* - Manu's Windsurfing Blog, The STORE! |

I'm 170lbs(77kg).
Example image found on the web of the footstrap locations:
3 positions. The setting nearest the mast is where I had them initially and that's where my feet are by default and most of the time. I've since moved them to the second setting as seen in the image. I can't get into them as I tend to lose my board speed on my way back to the straps. I can plane for long distances out of the straps regardless.
I have not moved the straps back to the 3rd setting as I haven't fully been able to utilize the second setting yet.
I consider light wind 10 mph and under.
Interesting the older model had 2 settings and they were basically both in the same spot:

the trick in getting in the straps further back: mast foot pressure. also, do not hook until you are in the front strap. most people in most venues that start doing this advance quickly once they start doing so. OTOH, those that insist on hooking first then trying to strap get stuck at that level. seen it countless times.
do you sail with others? the stream of questions indicates you may not. please seek personal advice at a more local level. it will be worth the extra drive. _________________ www.aerotechsails.com

You don't LOOK like 170 pounds.
I love the padding and rocker/rail curves, but is there a board in the picture? |

With your feet that far forward you aren't really onto the planing rocker IMHO. You need to go much faster. |
