In Sept. 2010 -

Quote:
The U.S. Has More than 12,000 Tariffs

Most Americans think of the U.S. as a free-trade country with open markets, and countries like China and Japan as protectionist countries with closed markets. And yet the U.S. is quite protectionist, when we consider that there are more than 12,000 tariffs (i.e. taxes) on imported products that are sometimes as high as 350% in the case of tobacco (pictured above); 164% on peanuts; 100% on jam, chocolate and ham; and 48% on sneakers.

Congress is preparing assail China for protectionist policies, like a 105.4% tariff on US poultry. But anyone who thinks America is a perfect practitioner of free trade needs to wake up.

The International Trade Commission lists over 12,000 specific tariffs on imports to America. Hundreds of agricultural, textile, and manufacturing items are highly protected. So are obscure items like live foxes.
As American deindustrialization continues apace, that list will just get longer.

Absolutely the worst policy in my lifetime(not including Nixon)....hurting the markets , and hurting the economy, as we decelerate rapidly...

It's not a policy, Its an attempt to stop a country who cheat, and steal at a multi billion dollar level and needs to be stopped. And your precious Silicon valley is in the cross-hairs.

If you have a better idea on how to stop these international thugs....let me know.

That may work in the snowflake world you live in , but not the real world.

Ripping us off for the past forty years and now going after our bread and butter.(high tech) doing nothing is not an option.

the last paragraph if you are too lazy to read..

For decades, successive American administrations have concluded that some level of exposure to China’s depredations against our intellectual property is simply the cost of doing business with the world’s now second-largest economy. This is not acceptable. Although China is an important trading partner with the United States, it is imperative to establish a fair and level trading environment

matty, the Chinese play the long game. We play in 2 year election cycles. Just to inform you, the sugar high from the BS meeting on Saturday night was squelched today by Mr. NaVarro. And thanks for the concern for Silicon Valley but they've been dealing with IP theft for the 30 years I've worked here....

No disagreement here, but the strategy to reverse course is rookie ball 101, being led by a band of idiots. The Chinese can endure years of higher tariffs, our economy CAN NOT... We will start losing limbs in 2019, and the market is already starting to discount it....

I don't think China can afford play the "long game" like they used to, they own too much of our debt now, big mistake on their part. So now they need us more than we need them. If we go south, they will be underneath us, and they know it.
Patience.

By all accounts it's hurting them much more. 600 billion last year lost to the CCs, maybe when we hit a TRILLION you will wake up....
