Harley-Davidson plans to shift some motorcycle production away from the US to avoid the "substantial" burden of European Union tariffs.

Last week the EU introduced retaliatory tariffs on US goods, including bourbon, orange juice and motorcycles.

Wisconsin-based Harley-Davidson has assembly plants in Australia, Brazil, India and Thailand.

The company said it will raise investment in its international plants, but did not say which ones.

"To address the substantial cost of this tariff burden long-term, Harley-Davidson will be implementing a plan to shift production of motorcycles for EU destinations from the US to its international facilities to avoid the tariff burden," the company said in an official filing to the US market regulator.

According to Harley-Davidson the tariffs have added, on average $2,200 (1,660) to each bike exported to the EU from the US.

They are doing the natural thing.....running like chickens. However, their sales have been falling in a good economy and their product is much better received in Europe.

Citing one example of a temporary setback doesn't mean failure. The European auto industry has already offered zero tariffs in response to Trump. DON'T GLOAT

Tariffs never work...Look at the market today. The countries that typically utilize tariffs the most aggressively are the slowest growers on the planet, and quite socialistic--economically. This is a bird- brained policy from a lazy president that does not want to do the important more difficult work..

The HD announcement is a prime example of the dislocation that tariffs cause...Look at the shares of CAT, in free-fall this month as their input costs soar, and international buying power dries up... It's a disastrous strategy and technology is next, the prime growth engine of the US.

The Trumpster does not get tariffs and their shortcomings. He thinks he can muscle his way out of things. Reactions so far are muted.
Meanwhile the hypocrite had no problem using Chinese Steel and Aluminum when it fit his needs.

A man with the attention span of a fruit fly thinks he can control the economy with tweets and tariffs. Right wingers who love despots cheer.

Quote:
President Trump on Tuesday threatened the iconic motorcycle company Harley-Davidson with severe taxes and predicted a public revolt that he said would eventually put the 115-year-old firm out of business, blasting the Wisconsin company for a plan to move some operations outside the United States as a way to avoid getting caught in the middle of an escalating trade war.

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump
A Harley-Davidson should never be built in another country-never! Their employees and customers are already very angry at them. If they move, watch, it will be the beginning of the end - they surrendered, they quit! The Aura will be gone and they will be taxed like never before!

Trump also accused Harley-Davidson, without providing any evidence, of intentionally misleading Americans by saying the firm was moving some operations out of the United States in response to new tariffs imposed by the European Union.

The intensity of these attacks, which he typically reserves for political opponents, came in Twitter posts.

Funny that you mention Venezuela, one of the seven countries that are on the travel ban upheld by the supremes today.
