I had some used windsurfing equipment in Florida 2 years ago and was trying to learn to windsurf. Living in Nebraska now and would like to give it another shot. Trying to find a local windsurfing community and possibly some leads on used gear.

Only lake in Nebraska that anyone knows about is MacConaughy, which is amazing sailing, but close to nothing. Iowa has some decent lakes, and of course Kansas has a bunch of kiters and windsurfers. If it's warm and they're callin' at least 20-30 mph on a weekend, then there'll be a bunch of people at Wilson lake (near Russell, KS).
Where are you in Nebraska?

There is a Facebook page for "Nebraska Windsurfing Association" which shows 16 members. Staci Armbruster & Robert Richardson are active members who live in Omaha. They have each come to race at the Dam Jam, Lake Saylorville, Polk City IA (a MOWIND event). Contacting Staci & Robert on Facebook might get you some additional Lincoln names. Steve Rose is shown on the Facebook page as living in Lincoln. If you aren't on Facebook send a private message to me. I'm Facebook friends with both Staci & Robert and know they are active enough on Facebook they are likely to respond.

A few years ago I sold a Mistral One Design board to a guy who was planning to sail on Capitol Beach Lake, in west Lincoln...I don't remember his name. There are a few windsurfers who sail Lake Manawa just south of Council Bluffs IA, particularly Matt Volenec who windsurfs & kitesails over a wide area.

Over the years many of the relatively few Nebraska windsurfers have sailed Calmus Reservoir. Many also attend the Toucan Open, Sandy Beach, Lake McConaughy, Ogallala which is usually the weekend after Labor Day. That is organized by Larson's Ski & Sport (http://larsonsport.com) from Wheat Ridge CO. I haven't been to Calmus but I've driven 8.5 hours one way twice to the Toucan....it is a fine event. Read about it on the Larson's Ski & Sport web site.

I sailed once (on a trip to CO) at Pawnee Lake State Park near Lincoln. That worked. I think Branched Oak Lake would be better due to its size.

Save the 3rd weekend in May for a trip to the Dam Jam. And save the 2nd weekend in June for the Worthington Regatta & Music Festival, Worthington MN.

I forgot to mention NebraskaWindsurfer on YouTube. He has videos of windsurfing on several Nebraska lakes, plus "windskating" Werner Park in Omaha. Watching the videos could inspire some trips in Nebraska for you and if you can contact him you might find some local friends who can share windsurfing.
