You shouldn't have more than 6" extra. Cut off any more than that. Then just tie a simple slip knot at the end so you can pop it free easily to adjust on the water. |

Use a butcher's knot. If you know how to wrap a roast, you know this knot. It's also called a Caterpillar Sinnet. It's benefit is it's almost impossible to jam thus almost always easy to open and can be pulled apart with one hand. I use this to shorten the end of my adjustable outhaul line before racing.
You start near the boom end. Start to make a half hitch but only pull an inch or two of the line through the loop that is near the boom. Cinch it tight making a new loop. Push some line through that loop and tighten, forming a new loop through with you push some line and tighten . . . etc.
