|
|
Hi,
I am currently interested to buy the NP RS Flight AL foil.
I am 165 Lbs. I want to get going in 10 knots or less ; (i.e plane easier than with my Starboard formula F147 and 9.8m sail, and with less efforts)
How does the NP AL performs compared to the others for light winds (but not extreme light winds) ?
Also, do you think this foils is doing well for marginal conditions (i.e gusty,). Besides the threshold to get going, how does it perform to glide through lulls. What is the minimum wind to keep going once up ?
I am thinking to match it a starboard formula F147 and a North 7.3 S-type
Do you think it would work decently ?
Thanks and happy foiling! |

Yep, it'll work great.
You are 165 lbs. and if you have a solid 10 knots... and know how to pump, you'll be flying with a 7.3 on your 147L FW. All the windfoils that have been out since late 2016 are doing well... including the NP alum. _________________ Greg

Worth looking at one with a flanged head like the Zeeko or Manta, the ones without can be hard on fin boxes. |

...... or LP... or Slingshot....
Yes, these and the other similar mast - strut - inserts... that have a flange, will help with support. Which will make it a bit easier on your finbox. _________________ Greg

Thanks.
I can have my fin box strength improved at a local shop for 200$. I am just wondering if its worth it. (it would be pure waste of money if the board does not work with the foil in the end).
I am afraid that the board might be too wide...
I do not have much other option, no used boards of proper width is available for sale in my area at this time.
As am I am in Canada, it's tough to get good prices on foil due to US exchange rate.
Right now, the NP AL is clearly the winner for price @ 980 CAD.
There is also a Fanatic H9 at 1150 $ Cad and a Horue H10 at 1450$ Cad
Do you think they would be easier on the fin box ? It could make sense to buy a more expansive foil if it avoids the need to re-work my fin box, and if they are clearly better for learning and light wind.
Let me know your thoughts! |

I'll stay with my first answer... just get the NP alum.
Why do you think your 147L Starbord FW is too wide?
You'll take the back straps off... so you can put your back foot wherever you want, as you figure out the various balance points.
Lots of people foiling with stock formula boards, they work great.
As for finboxes, I'm 200 lbs and have been learning on 2 different Starboard boards (a FW and a Go board) with Deep Tuttle boxes, and I've crashed a lot... and no damage to the finbox yet.
Just use what you have.
If something cracks, some time in the future... then you can repair it and beef it up, then. _________________ Greg

Your foil has a flange Greg, it's a big difference from what I've seen.
I'm definitely with you in terms of board width plus if you have a shop doing work that cheap then they can install some inboard strap inserts. |

Board width can be overrated for foiling. My board is 73 cm wide & works fine in 10 knts with a 5.7 sail. I weigh 175 lbs.

@ Coachg,
From what I have read, the Naish foil works well with narrow board (i.e 122L 73 cm wide)
But is it the case of all foils ? The naish foil shape seems quite unique.
There has to be a reason why NP and JP foil boards are much wider....
The idea for me is really to get to try the foil for the year without buying a brand new board. Ideally I would use a 85 cm board, but I can't find a use one a decent price, so it will have to be a formula. I just want to make sure it is compatible (i.e not too wide).
Also, it is unclear to me if the board width helps (or not at all) with taking off earlier.
Does the board actually plane first , and then the speed increase due to planing allows to take off ? Or does the board goes from displacement to take off directly ?
