Cant say that Ive tried this, but if you are only interested in protecting your ribs, why not check out a flak jacket that football players/athletes wear while nursing a bruised or broken rib. It wont provide any added floatation, but it might be thin enough to work with any harness, or might be cut high enough to work with many harnesses. Having broken a rib and bruised a few, Ive thought about it, but so far have just continued sailing without.

ProMotion in Hood River has just designed a flotation vest for kite boarding, but it looks like it will be ideal for wind surfing with a waist harness - very high cut and snug, with a strap that hooks into the harness hook to keep the vest from riding up too high.
My only concern is that the boom has an annoying habit of finding that one place between the top of the harness and the bottom of the flotation vest.
I dont think theyve begun production yet, but they promised them in August.
