… the gleaners, a large group who glean the orchards and farms for rejected crops they distribute to the needy, will be there. Sounds great, but it gives them no rights the general public doesn’t have. They can’t tell you where you can or cannot park, threaten to drive you away with their all night partying, or save empty parking spots for their buddies. The last time they tried these tactics, a call to the Army Corps of Engineers in The Dalles brought a ranger out for a long discussion of federal park rules with them. It got their attention, so there may be no such problems this year. In particular, each parking spot remains first-come, first-serve for all park users to enjoy.

The one exception -- voluntary but a nice gesture on the part of other park users -- is leaving room on the western border of the main parking lot for the big motor home that becomes their group kitchen and the windblock for their giant grilles, propane fireplace, dining tables, and Party Central. A slot on that end/edge is the only practical place for that feature.

I've seen no overflow in past years, but they do expand a bit each year. The problem is more a matter of attitude than numbers, but a wind/kite surfing crowd could compound the issue. The crap we bring along clutters mostly the lawn; theirs clutters the parking lot. I just wanted folks to know that the leader's bluster is just that -- bluster -- and as with any large group, individual attitudes vary highly. Some were insistent with their turf demands, most just wanted to know about our wind sports or did their own thing. I observed no noisy arguments, mostly because we chose to let the Corps deal with it without our getting involved.

The crowd was small, but made up for it with volume far into the night, driving some other campers out of the parking lot. A Corps ranger lectured them on Saturday, and we didn't hear a peep out of them that night.

Poor me: I had to sail alone Sunday. Seems everybody took the lousy forecast to heart and left Sat evening or Sunday AM. The wind lasted only a couple of hours, but it was strong and reasonably steady as Fall frontal winds go.
