Bert,
You'll need a front foil for that barge!
Years ago, way before the current crop of foils, there was a guy that sailed
a similar length board (old school) with homemade front and rear foils, at Point Isabel. He actually sailed it quite well. Definitely a pioneer in the "new" sport.

Saw him there - but never made a jibe/turn successfully as I recall.

Rich Miller and Marlo...
Neither made jibes, so only tacked.
I tried it once at Pt Isabelle, made every jibe, but really slowly and took forever, against the wish's of those guys. I can't tack. My jibes were half shortboard, when the board was up on foil to touchdown, then half longboard, using the sail to complete a slow motion move.
We were talking about angled front wings afterwards.

Hard to do when one is having so much fun otherwise, maybe in October ... when you guys on the foils were out yesterday I was on my Carbon Art Slalom 52 wide, with the Point-7 ACX 5.8. Probably one of the best days of the season going at top speed in the swell outside. I even hit 32 knots, don't know how, the swell must have helped, passing pretty much anything in sight including the big slalom boards ... simplicity in motion!

Just another video to whet your foiling appetite..note the absence of turbulence as opposed to a non foiled board.

If you like foiling, then for sure do it.... but....
Don't do it because it's your light wind alternative to windsurfing.
Windsurfing, with a wide slalom board and big sail, we can plane in just about the same winds as windsurf foiling, but need a bit more wind than kitefoiling with foil kites and foils.
Down to around 10 knots, 11 mph, we're just fine using windsurf boards with big sails. Big is a relative term, of course. For some, 5.0 is a big sail. For other's, a 7.5 is the middle of the quiver of 3.

Its 24 in the channel now and Bert is getting ready to attack it with his foil. I'm impressed he can even carry that contraption down the ramp!

Got killed at 3rd on a 4.2 this Friday, still can't handle 20 mph with chop but I'll keep trying. The new JP Hydrofoil bucks up like a crazed bronco in those conditions. Yesterday at Palo Alto I foiled the Kona CarbOne longboard in 12-13 mph with a 6.6 Hucker. It was crazy fun! The big board flew straight and stable for 1 1/2 to 2 mile runs. Unreal!
