But always set it up with a hard plastic bushing between the extension adjustment pin and the bottom of the mast in order to protect the mast.
Composites do not like point loads.
However you run your extension, you want to have the bottom of the mast well supported so the downhaul load is evenly distributed over the entire surface of the bottom of the mast - i.e. use a collar.
Putting the tapered section of the extension up into the bottom of the mast or sitting the bottom of the mast on a 1/4" diameter pin is just a bad idea.

Yes, yes, and yes again. While the thicker wall of an RDM mast does protect from all sorts of stuff compared to a standard diameter mast, resting on a single point (literally) makes no sense.
You must remember that the RDM mast will rock toward the cleat side of the extension. Since the pin is round and the mast tube cut flat, the tube will rest on a single, tiny point on the extension's adjustment pin. You might say that the mast would rest on two points. After all, the pin should be perpendicular to the plane in which the mast rocks inside the extension.
A distinction without a difference. It's worth noting that the top rim of the extension will contact the mast directly, and the mast will rotate slightly when sailing. Do you like to cut grooves in your mast? _________________ Support Your Sport. Join US Windsurfing!
