atlas.wave55, can you tell us what boards you are on? Also as U2 mentioned, I also went from the Lion to a Cheetah and would never consider going back. I preferred the lion without the cams, but the luff sleeve is wider than the Cheetah, which makes waterstarts more difficult, Also once you get some grit in your luff sleeve the cams wear the mast. I broke a mast once right where one of the cams ate away at the mast. If you are sailing in waves go with a 7.0 wave sail or something in the ballpark.

I have a 100L and 110L wave board ( I am going to keep one wave board) which I use when the wind picks up but usually my lake is around 15km with minimal chop. I have sold my old bic 145L board and am looking to upgrade that with a formula or a large slalom board to pair with the Ezzy 7.5.

Call me crazy, but at 140lbs I think you should be looking at in the area 5.0-5.5 m^2 for wavesailing.

Anything over a 6 meter sail is a flat water tool for someone your size.

I have a 110L quad that I use a 5.7 on (max) and I weigh 175lbs in a bathing suit. That's good for 15-20mph for me. Less wind than that and I use the same 5.7 or 5.3 with a Sup.

I agree that a 5-5.5m sail with my 110L would be great in 20 mph at my weight. In terms of light wind cruising and TOW what board do you think would suit me best. What I like about formula is up/down wind angles and planning in light wind but I'm wondering if a formula board with the 7.5m sail could work well in that considering formula's have 60-70cm sized fins and looking on Riggeek I found this:

agreed, short and wide requires either rigging big, or pumping.

rs 8. i can't effectively pump it with a 9.0 sail. thus, no pumping rquired. needs bigger sailor, or larger sail. frickin massive board, for a 7 foot+ sailor to pump. once on a plane, it stays going.

concerning comments about wave gear, i sail a 7.5 or 6.8 and either 11'5" longboard, x-wave 129 or exo-wave 105 most in florida. about 100 days a year. work gets in the way, so it could be more like 180 days....

i sail 5.8 sails and down less than 12 days a year.

i weigh 210lbs and sail florida east coast. job anchors me here.

Looking at the Douglas windsurf calculator, It seems correct for my weight and being fully powered.

173 lb 5.3=23mph, 16-18mph=7.0 (a 6.0 would have me planing at 16-18 mph)

140 lb 5.3=18mph, 16-18=5.6 (based on my numbers above I would think 5.0 would marginally work at 16-18mph)

210 lb 5.3=28mph, 16-18=8.6 (see the huge difference between 210lb and 140lb)

Yah that sounds right. I can get planning in considerable lighter winds with smaller sails, which is why can get planning in 16 km of wind on a formula with a 7.4 m sail with a 54cm fin and at your weight in the same conditions it would be a 9.1 m sail with a 66cm fin on the same board in 16km or 9 knots of wind.

as a passive heavyweight "older" windsurfer ...
passive means little or no pumping
heavyweight means over 100 kilos
older means grey hair and wishing I was retired (more windsurfing if retired and still in good health)

9-12 knots is longboard material (or WindSUP, etc) - pumping Formula is an option (not for me)
12-15 knots is wide freeride planing - Formula is an option
16+ is good winds and MANY more options
