I used to get GI issues everytime I went to Mex.. For the last 15 or so years my wife and I have been taking pro -biotics (Jarrow-Dophilus) and neither of us has ever had a problem. You fortify your gut with good flora so there's no room for bad bactiria to move in. Works for us. |

Scottjk: Yes Advantage Rent a Car will most definately try to screw you. Strange outfit, apparently belongs to Hertz. First of all, they quote in dollars, but when the final bill is tallied, they demand that you pay in pesos, converting your dollar total to a peso total with an exchange rate that is higher than banks give (eg, 15 rather than 13) so your bill goes up by over ten percent. Do not pay any portion of the bill in cash when receiving the car because it will not be credited on the final bill. Some of the cars are poorly maintained and some are new, check the tires and controls. On the plus side, if you don't want the enhanced liability insurance, they don't demand you take it. |

I just got back from La Ventana. Trip couldn't have gone any better. After digging through various posts on Trip Advisor I found an excellent place to rent a car.
I emailed Antonio and got a complete quote of $150 for 5 days with liability insurance included. I arrived in Cabo and went straight to the curb outside where they had my name on a plaque. They called for the shuttle to pick me up, drove me to the rental center, filled out the paperwork and I was on my way. The center is right on Highway 1 with a Pemex just up the street on the way to La Ventana. There is also a bank across the street if you need an ATM.
**Note about insurance. When you rent a car with a credit card you are generally covered for loss/damage but only after you have exhausted what your regular car insurance from home will cover. That means that there is a possibility of having your car insurance rates increase due to a claim as well as the hassle of dealing with multiple entities to deal with a loss/damage situation. American Express offers an extended car rental program that you can sign up for that will charge you about $20 per rental period, not day, and covers you 100% for all loss/damage. Cheap piece of mind but you have to sign up for it. It isn't automatic just because you have a AMEX Card. **
I rented a VW GOL. Very small car but perfect for me and my gear. Car was in what looked like new condition and was very clean inside. Great gas mileage.
I returned the car extremely dirty and full of sand. The guy walked around, checked the gas and signed me off. No hassle, no additional charges. I'll be using Antonio again next month.
When you email him for a rate ask for the 'Trip Advisor' rate.

Dialogues have been broken down between consumer advocacy groups and businesses that rent cars. The consumer organizations want to prevent companies from renting cars that have not been repaired, despite being focused on in a recall campaign. If you need to buy a car, you can get a rental. _________________ buy a car |

What, if any, additional insurance should I be purchasing? Will my State Farm policy cover damage or loss in Mexico for a rental car? What gotchas do I need to look for when renting?
Thanks
