Almost any kind of north swell gets the weird wave going. It can slam you if you're not paying attention because the water is moving in different directions and rather suddenly changes. I tore my long tendon of my right shoulder there beginning the progressive destruction of that shoulder. Anyway, best to avoid it or power through it and get the hell out of there.

The locals say in the winter avoid it else can get trapped and trashed when it's huge!

A beloved nugget to me
AKA Portugee wave

My favorite way to end an Uppers session.
Understanding where it comes from allows you to get it, and on the right swell, you can zip dtl from almost Uppers right into the pocket, and then get Tossed 50 yards directly to windward.!!!

But yeah...many a poor sole has gotten blindsided by it

Fortunately, WW stays mostly in the same spot and can be avoided. Still, it got me good once when trying to slog upwind from lowers to uppers. Pain in the butt. Consequently, I mostly sail lowers.

I just drag my gear up and launch above WW (more towards Uppers),
but I have to say the thing seems to be a magnet for me, and I'm
constantly fighting to stay away from it both going out and coming in,
when I'm not in a set.

yep, only my second time in Maui, was there in September, and I was the only guy looking with my eyes wide open, trying to see other people reacting to it, to no avail Smile
As if I suddenly found myself in a "they live" situation.
Asked and got the same exploded reef explanation. Have windsurfed and sailed around and have never seen anything similar before.
On a medium wind day, jumped it because it surprised me, but did not notice currents or anything weird.

Last Friday when the north swell was up, the weird wave was looking pretty gnarly. I said I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole. Then I ran right into a 10 foot pole. Did a slow motion over the handlebar dismount. It looked to be a lodge pole or something. No way to avoid it.
