Sad to say, our good friend Art Newman has moved on to another plane.
If you knew Art and would like to go to a celebration of his life on September 18th, please write me directly at cliff.hauser@gmail.com and I'll pass on the information to his family so you can get an invitation with detailed info.
Art was an avid surfer, windsurfer, and multi hull racer. He was among the first to surf the Malibu Pier, and even appeared in the movie "Gidget"--on a wave, of course!
An early member of Malibu Yacht Club when located adjacent to the Pier, he later joined California Yacht Club, where he ardently campaigned his one-design Olympic Class Tornado catamaran, and later a very fast trimaran. He pioneered the acceptance of multi-hulls as actual legitimate racing boats among the sometimes stuffy yacht racing crews, and our fleet was always welcomed at Cal Yacht Club as a result and later throughout the world. If you enjoyed the multi-hull racing in the last America's Cup, you can see the latest results of his influence.
If you know Art from windsurfing, you know him from his never-shy persona at Leo Carrillo. Armed with a big smile and a rapier wit, he affected everyone around him, and is sorely missed. |

One of the originals who was always interesting and lively. I'd always hoped to see him on the top of the stairs again. RIP Art |
