Those photos make me nostalgic for the forebay.....spent many windy weekends there back in the old days. Tons of people from all over. Great place for the kiddies...even had a frog pond. I'm not sure why we quit going. Next year!!

Here's a shot of my brand new Seatrend 9'1" Circa 1986...it gave me my first taste of real speed!

Copper Sulfate is what they use .
They started that last year .
They use to have a machine that would actually cut them.
But it broke .
You can see the slick spots from my pictures in early July and the ones
from now where there are no slick spots .

http://www.lakerestoration.com/p-48-copper-sulfate.aspx?gclid=CjwKEAjw26C9BRCOrKeYgJH17kcSJACb-HNAk5nNGrYhRH7WuEJ43M5sYVAWbWOiwNoEmHeOM5YzmBoC1vjw_wcB
though I wasn't there to see the rangers told me it happened .

Yeah it use to be if you didn't get there by noon you parked in the second
row of cars and abk was down there for about a month and a half of weekends.
Now it's my own personnel lake on the North Side most of the time.
And the board inspection to get in is a big hassle.

Got there at 1pm Smoke from Soberanes fire was significant.
The whole area looked liked it was enshrouded in a gloomy smog
for as far as I could see. The smoke did not show on the satellite
maps I was looking at. I swear I was feeling a little oxygen
starved . Rigged a 5.7 no go at first. Sat around for about an
hour and the North West Wind kicked in and it cleared out the smoke.
The 5.7 was OK to pretty powered at times with drop an return to
in range conditions over the afternoon. I tried going without a weed
fin but there are still places you need one.

Water level near 223

Hi ctuna,

We appreciate your posts on San Luis Reservoir and Forebay. I've driven through but never sailed there myself but would like to try at some point

Can you offer a quick recap of what conditions you might consider sailing the main reservoir vs the forebay, and how well the sensor represents the sailing conditions?

Also, how is the board inspection conducted? Thanks in advance.

The main res is emptier than I have ever seen it
Still bigger than the fore bay though.
And they once upon a time required you carried safety gear.
so actually getting to the water might be a problem.
Boat ramp appears not to be long enough.
Inspection is they look to see if your boards are dry and clean
and they are looking to see where your from with Southern ca
being a red flag. They may ask you where your boards have last
been out.

Be sure to have your boards dry for the zebra and or quagga muscle
inspection. If you come in on the North gate on the weekend
they make you go down to the boat ramp at the forebay on that side
for the inspection but not on the south gate I would say on NW the to West the sensor is a little under what is actually going on . When I get back an review

If you go down there a lot its worth getting a poppy pass that gets you in
for day use for a year and a month and is good for a bunch of other state parks like natural bridges. cost 125 this year entry fee is 10 bucks otherwise
I believe.
the Data sometimes I have noticed than when it says 12 to 14 I can find patches to plain on 5.7 to 6 and when it says 20 I am fully powered on
a 5.3 and I weigh 220 although all my boards are in the 105 to 117 range.

Thanks ctuna, good info. I generally sail SF Bay, not sure those critters are an issue in brackish water, or just a fresh water problem.

My board generally dries out between sessions, but foot straps can remain moist. Was it you or someone said that can be an issue with inspection?

I would be coming from 101 so assume that would be entering through the south gate to Forebay?

Where would inspection be for main reservoir?

You mentioned Natural Bridges, what a great place to sail! Although it seems to not have had much good wind this year. Odd because SF Bay as been SW a lot this year, which in the past meant that NB would fire pretty well, but seemingly no the case this year. Anyway, maybe Godsey can offer a treatise on that problem, ha ha.

Yep foot straps dry put the board on top of your car no bag.
It will air dry them pretty fast.
They started the inspection when some of the lakes
around holister got infected. A lot of the little lakes
even near San Jose have been quarantined and are under
inspection or off limits for entry. This is a fresh water creature
so most spots in the bay are not effected.
This is kind of BS because of the nature of Windsurf Boards
anyway.
Well most of the Coast from Wadell to Santa Cruz has been shut
down due to fog for August, even a lot of the upper Bay area
hasn't been to good. Good for Rio Vista and usually San Luis
which are both usually good on similar weather patterns.
Not so much for San Luis the last two weeks.

San luis north gate number

if you have more questions.
They may have to get you in touch with someone else
for more details as they are rotating people in an out
of the place a lot.

I always throw my old 2008 Tabou 3S on my roof rack without a board bag when I head out to the lake (mostly because I have a nice powerbox weed fin and it's my only powerbox board.) They've always just checked that one when I drive in and ignore the wet stuff in my car. It definitely speeds up your entry when you don't have to unpack your stuff.
