ya swindler does not like Daily Koz.... to bad... this content is spot on.

again the rich (1%) have gotten so much of the wealth since Reaganomics, voodoo economics of trickle down (as I call it piss on americans) and the middle class and poor have paid the price. Reagan attacking the middle class saying unions are bad. as we know we have dropped from number 1 in so many metrics from then, from education and so on. Developed nations/countries with the strongest unions have passed us up in almost all the metrics for middle class. I think we are now rated number 9 or so.

Here is a simple thing that is so pathetic in the USA, to penalize a child with poverty that they are so shamed because their own pride says they can not go to school because they are embarrassed by not having the basic clean cloths.

I tell ya this one makes me proud that someone recognized this and did something about it. Why can't critical things like this be addressed by the ultra wealthy vs donating to the chamber of commerce the largest giver of money for right wing politics. what is more important than our future generation getting educated.

St. Louis school sees 90% of their students' attendance increase because of washing machines

Quote:
Anybody with kids and anybody without kids who doesn’t own a washing machine knows how much of a bummer washing clothes can be. It’s not cheap, it’s not usually convenient, and when you aren’t able to get clothing washed you can feel pretty awful about yourself. Former principal Dr. Melody Gibson at Gibson Elementary School in St. Louis, Missouri, found herself at a loss as to why her (mostly low-income) students were suffering such low attendance rates. They had free or reduced lunches. What else was holding them back?

In talking to parents, Gunn discovered that many didn’t have easy access to washing machines. Or if they did have machines, they couldn't always use them because they couldn’t afford detergent, or their electricity had been shut off. For these families, laundry had to take a backseat to more pressing needs such as food and rent.

It turned out that when students didn’t have clean clothes, they often stayed home from school out of embarrassment. Logan, an eighth-grader, spoke about how difficult it is for others to understand his problem: “I think people don’t talk about not having clean clothes because it makes you want to cry or go home or run away or something. It doesn’t feel good.”

She went to Whirlpool and asked them for a washing machine and dryer. She invited students that had missed more than 10 days of school to wash their clothing. The program quickly became larger, with Whirlpool sending 16 machines to schools in St. Louis.

“After just one month, we saw an impact,” Gunn tells CityLab. The more long-term results of the program have actually been remarkable. The first year saw over 90 percent of tracked students increase their attendance, with those most in need of the service averaging an increase of almost 2 weeks. Teachers surveyed reported that 95 percent of participants showed more motivation in class and were more apt to participate in extra-curricular activities. The results support research demonstrating that chronic absenteeism isn’t because of kids’ lack of smarts or motivation, but is largely due to coming from a low-income household.

Income inequality affects us in every aspect of our lives. The mountain of stress and the logistics of being impoverished can be so overwhelming and disheartening it is difficult to explain it to someone who has never experienced it. Whirlpool is expanding its program to Baltimore and Nashville. Many other schools around the country have reached out to them for similar services. When you hear about school funding getting cut along with food stamps and other social services, just remember this: there are elementary school-aged children sitting around in dirty clothes because they cannot afford to wash those clothes. This program is a good one and does good things and while it provides relief to many, it is not a solution to our more profound problems of income and social inequality.

I won't read your post; the title alone is too ridiculous.

Whether Bill Gates has billions or trillions, the DIFFERENCE between his net worth and anyone else's has absolutely zero effect on their QOL (unless you consider envy a valid component of QOL). Please tell us how what Gates drives, lives in, or eats degrades YOUR QOL. In fact, Gates has ADDED to virtually everyone's QOL and net worth, thus earning his money.

This greed/envy/income disparity/wealth redistribution absolute BS is purely an invention of the far left, and forced wealth redistribution is just another guise for socialism, communism, and/or buying votes with other people's money.

One would think that anyone intelligent enough to type a coherent sentence when sober or to make enough money to retire early could understand that, but that assumption has been disproved by thousands of jocks, rock and movie stars, drug dealers, and jealous left wing extremists.

Baja posts this headline:
Quote:

Which is the same in the Dailykos headline.

BOGUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When you read the story, you find:

Quote:
The first year saw over 90 percent of tracked students increase their attendance, with those most in need of the service averaging an increase of almost 2 weeks. Teachers surveyed reported that 95 percent of participants showed more motivation in class and were more apt to participate in extra-curricular activities.

The key here is "tracked students". While the idea of assisting students in poverty with washing machines is commendable, the story would be a lot more meaningful if it gave numbers. "tracked students" may only number 10, or maybe 100, but it loses all credibility by leaving out the actual number that were tracked and assisted. It did say 16 washing machines in schools, so maybe the number is respectable, or not. It didn't elaborate on these needy kids bringing laundry bags to school and how that impacted their self esteem. The story needs a lot more to make it worthy of reading.

That's one reason The Dailykos is considered less than a credible news source by most folks.

How does Dean justify his claimed wealth? On whom did and does he still crap by keeping it rather than giving it away? And how does the difference between his net worth and mine harm ME or some student? What nonsense!

I don't even know or care what the laundry reference is. WhatEVER it is, it cannot amount to the fourth decimal place in a student's college costs. I refuse to believe it costs a student more than a few bucks to wash and dry a week's worth of dirty laundry -- one big load -- at a laundromat, especially considering the casual -- PC for "grungy" -- crap kids wear these days (coeds at my university had to wear dresses/skirts on weekdays).

Now let's assume he was talking about secondary school kids. Let's not forget that even the poor in the US are richer than the middle class in much of Europe, let alone the third world. Just one source among many is
"Census: Americans in ‘Poverty’ Typically Have Cell Phones, Computers, TVs, VCRS, AC, Washers, Dryers and Microwaves " at http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/terence-p-jeffrey/census-americans-poverty-typically-have-cell-phones-computers-tvs
and many of them had that crap -- especially microwave, color TV, cell phone -- before I did.

Am I sorry some folks are poor, or at least poorer than I? Sure. But what the HELL does the DIFFERENCE between my or Deans' or Gates' net worth and some student's have to do with that student's life? Does Dean think there's only a fixed amount of money to go around?

SERIOUSLY?

If so, who the hell's fault is that? I'll tell ya: The Left Wing Media, today's Democratic Party, and the resulting brainwashed millennials.
