How do adjustable length harness lines help your sailing? When would you want them longer or shorter? |

2 main reasons:
1). accomodate different sail sizes.
2). accomodate different sailing styles (bump&jump, slalom, wave)
Generally speaking, shorter lines for high speed slalom sailing, longer lines for bump&jump and wave. You need to be able to get in and out easier.
adjustables help you get comfortable in the saddle. |

isnt it the other way around...
I mean, I bump and jump, and mine are short.

its a personal preference. But if you are jumping and riding huge chop, I dont think you want to be locked in too tight, thats why the harness lines are let out more in BnJ and Waves. For slalom, you are locked in good for speed. If its not too choppy, and you are more slalom sailing, then I can understand why you shorten them, but not in radical BnJ. |

Dude,,, get real...
you got it totally backwards....
I was trying to be nice and all, but think about.
in slalom you want longer for leaverage on bigger sails raked back while your chest is forward and facing your direction of tack.
on bump and jump and wave, shorters lines are the norm... smaller sails and quicker moves mean flopping all over the !@#$% place lines just dont cut it....
I dont want you to think I am not social or anything, I just dont think that you are thinking this through.
however, you had said that it is a preferance thing.
This IS TRUE,
IT IS A PREFERANCE.
I think most prefer the lines shorter on bump and jump than they do on slalom.
We Might be just using this as an oppertunity to just gabb during the slow time....
Happy Sails bud.

I am talking about how I sail. I know I can shred both BnJ and slalom, Ive been sailing for about 10 years. Im not a world cup sailor or anything, but I know what works and Ive been doing it for awhile.
As for the slalom position, raking the sail back all the way, and good upright stance says the lines should be short. Even in a upwind sailing stance, as you allude to.
As for waves and BnJ, if your lines are short, you cant easy get in and out when jumping. I am not talking about a mile long here, just a few inches out from the slalom position.
hey, youre entitled to your opinion too..
where do you sail? |

In my opinion...
I keep my harness lines shorter in lighter winds on my 7.0 race sail. This keeps me upright and promotes quicker planing. When the wind fills in, I usually add downhaul and lengthen the lines for more leverage which allows for more range. With this setup Ive been able to sail this 7.0 in winds where others were rigging down to 5.0s.
Length is a personal preference but from what Ive seen, normally its shorter for slalom and longer for waves (but Im not a wave sailor). B&J folks usually use the same boom/sail for slalom so one would assume lines would be kept shorter than when wave sailing. If sailing completely overpowered and motoring when slalom sailing (my fav but not the norm) longer lines are nice. Chest facing your sailing direction, butt and legs in a seated position and your waist/stomach muscles eating up the chop while keeping the rig motionless.

yeah Isabella is a cool place to sail. I used to live in LA and sail Cabrillo and take trips up to Isabella. I miss that place! |
