Im planning a trip to Pistol River the first week in August, and Im wondering what to expect windwise. The CA coast has been pathetic this summer. Has it been better up there? Should I consider going further up the coast or perhaps to the Gorge? Any opinions appreciated! |

Your best bet is to be mobile and plan on a trip to either or both the coast and the gorge. The south Oregon Coast has been good to us this year, and so has the gorge. It seems like either one or the other is blowing around 30 on any given day.
If you go for the gorge and the coast is blowing, you can make Manzanita from Hood River in about 4 hours.
Watch the pager and the forecasts and let the wind be your guide. |

Step back and look at the bigger picture (from the eastern Gorge down the river to Astoria, and then down the coast), and youll find wind.
Probably.
Realize that any given week can be flat everywhere, and the narrower your search, the greater the odds of getting skunked.
