I admire the recent post “Help Protect San Francisco Windsurfing” by Buzzwordbrad http://www.iwindsurf.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=30476 , and pointing out the issues facing Candlestick Park. I am inspired to not only make my opposition to that project heard, although I do not sail there, I am also inspired to share another major issue facing not only Delta windsurfing & kiting but the Delta environment as a whole.
The proposed Delta Tunnels. If constructed, they will divert and reduce further, the fresh water running through the Delta Rivers. We have already seen the effects of reduced fresh water flows due to the continued drought. The Tunnels will make the situation worse for the Delta.
The water at Sherman Island contains much more salinity now than ever before and while I don’t mind seeing the jelly fish, sand sharks and other saltwater fish now frequenting these waters, we know it is neither right nor healthy for the river ecology and adjacent farmers and river enthusiasts. And reduced flows don’t flush out the toxins and pollutants that are in the rivers. The Environmental Impact Report is out and the last day for public comment on this project is the end of October. So to learn more and support the effort to oppose this project, please go to the following link http://restorethedelta.org/support-take-action/ or http://restorethedelta.org/ .

The reduced flows will have a serious negative impact on the bay as well.

I sailed the delta many moons ago and enjoyed spending time there often. Sorry to hear that things are being threatened. However, I realize that the bigger threat is the runoff from all of the chemicals they have used to contain the wildfires in California (fire retardant). All of these chemicals will be flushed into the waterways when it rains this wet (??) season. I do hope there is a water quality reporting agency that will give accurate measurements as to the mercury levels in the water both in the bay and delta.

Signed.
Driving up the 5 you see a lot of signs about there not being any water and agriculture jobs suffering because of it. Then as you get closer to the Delta you see signs opposing the tunnels. Come on El Nino!

Thanks for the head's up about this! I signed the change.org petition and e-mailed objections to the recommended address.

Thanks to all who have supported this effort and signed the petition. You helped to reach the goal of 7500 supporters (there are over 8000 now). To those who have not signed up yet, the new goal is to get 10,000 before the end of the month. Thank you also for the water quality data. Still trying to educate myself with that information.
