Some keyless systems let you lock the car with the remote fob near
the vehicle but if the fob is stowed anywhere near the vehicle, anyone could just push the unlock button on the door handle and get in.
I would get a realitor lock box they sell at the hardware store and hide the box
away from the vehicle, like under a tree or bush. You might even be able to lock it to something like a fence.

Faraday cage to block the radio signals
Then a dead key on a lanyard worn around your neck
is the next best thing.
Followed by putting it in a locked box attached to the car.
I use a mentos can as a Faraday cage for the Fob.
Make sure the doors won't open wherever you end up putting the
key Fob.

Standard insurance policies over here negate any claim for car theft if you leave a key anywhere in, or on, the vehicle. New cars are issued with two keys and, in event of theft the insurance company will require proof you still have both of them. (Also, many modern type keys cannot be duplicated by ordinary blanks to open the doors anyway.)

My solution has always been to carry a packet of ordinary small freezer bags, wrap the key in one with an elastic band around, slip it into a small cloth pouch with shoe lace loop attachment, and hang it around my neck, inside the wet suit.

Peace of mind, and never lost or damaged an electronic key yet.
