I have a Honda CRX, and would like to put racks on to carry a board. But I hear this nasty rumor that, because the bars can only be placed 18 apart, I might cause a pressure crease in the board if Im cruising on the freeways.
Anybody have an experience with this?

I used to have a CRX that I looked into getting a rack for. Nothing would fit! My requirements at the time were for carrying a kayak. I just got a set of foam pads and put them on the car and they worked great. They could be spaced farther apart on the roofline than the bars of the rack, too.

I used to have a 86 CRX years ago when I began windsurfing. That model had a hard rail/cutter above the door window, which the Thule padded towers with outside clip worked great on. I still have the Thule extension bars which allowed the rear bar to sit about a foot or more behind the end of the rail. Worked pretty slick. I carried an 11 Fanatic on freeways, and tied down the front (board had a tie down near the nose). Hope this is helpful.
