This may sound stupid, but would sunblock help protect monofilm sails from UV damage?

Yep. But so would paint, and it would be a LOT less messy. Instead, why not use stuff MEANT to protect plastic from uv, such as ... plastic protectant, available from most auto parts stores. 3M makes one called .... are ya ready? ... 3M Plastic Protectant.

Ive heard that some such protective agents, specifically Armorall, can dissolve the glue used in sail seams. Do you know whether this 3M Plastic Protectant might harm this glue?

Ive used 3Ms stuff on all my sails for a decade (one application when new), keeping many of them from 4 to 8 years. Not only did I never experience any seam problems, but Ive sold two four-year-old quivers for $200 per sail, and these were small RAFs used year-round. Of course, care also helps.

Is this 3M Plastic Protectant come as spray paint, or is it like armor all/formula 2001 stuff? Which car store chains sell it? (I couldnt find it at pep-boys..). Thanks.

NAPA carries it, plus a variety of other plastic polishes and protectants. Last time I sold a quiver, I bought several brands and tried tham all in an attempt to renew both monofilm and PVC windows. PVC can be made almost new with Meguiars plastic polish, but nothing really helps monofilm except a fresh coat of whatever to help hide the microscopic scratches. I suspect the best time to go to all he bother is just before selling tham, rather than when theyre new: I cant really imagine a few thousandths of an inch of anything clear is going to a) hold up and b) stop much uv. OTOH, Ive had potential buers ask the guy who made my sails by his own hands whether my sails had been used, and the maker had to get downon his hands and knees and look under the seams edges to find the tell-tale dirt that says, This sail has been used. That was after four long seasons in the Gorge. Of course, these were Hurricanes, which just dont wear out. I sold my 1991 Hurricane in 1999 for $200.
