A coworker I intoduced to sailboarding three years ago bought a whaler at a garage sail.After using it a couple of times and comparing it to my 310 he wants something shorter.Its heavy and has a big crack in the top.Because he is a family man with mouths to feed, money is a issue.If you were in his shoes would
A:try to sell it hoping it would bring some big money as an antique.
B: Since we have access to power tools cut it shorter to about ten feet.This would involve redoing the fin box.Would be kind of fun to try this to see if we could make it work.
C: Deal with it and just ride it.

Your friend would be infinitely ahead of the game if he did one of these things and considered these factors, IMO:

1. Dump it and buy a shorter board. Old boards are a dime a dozen.

2. Keep the Wayler. If hes sailed only a coyple of times, hell gain nothing by shortening it.

3. He must have a TON of time on his hands. This would be a huge effort resulting in a total POS.

4. If moneys an issue, hed come out ahead by just getting a second, part-time job, putting all this board-butchering time into that job, and using the money earned into an actual SAILBOARD rather than a homemade POS.

5. Im presuming this is one of the plastic Waylers. Do you guys have any CONCEPT of the challenges of skinning, shaping, and reskinning a board core? Are you both experienced hydrodynamics and board-design experts?

5. Whats the objective ... (a) a sailable board or (b) an engineering challenge? If (a), use it as is or buy a real board. If (b) use it as is or buy a real board, and do the engineering work for profit rather than headaches.

6. He could change boards a HELL of a lot cheaper than he could modify this one for.
