Is there anyone out there that does small board sailing with a knee replacement. I sail in Maui and need a new knee due to years of mogul skiing.

How many years? That is the only kind of skiing I do. Im just getting started with windsurfing. Maybe I should change my skiing habits.

I had a partial knee replaement four years ago and have had no trouble. There are not many orthopedic surgeons who perform the partial replacement. My doctor was in Buffalo NY, however I have given up mogal skiing although I ski 3 times a week and I am 74 years old.

About 40 years. Before my last knee injury I skied about 50 days a year.

As a physical therapist, I can assure you that windsurfing is significantly less stressful on the knee. I have worked with a lot of people with knee replacements and although none of them were sailors, the level of strength that can be achieved with a replacement is very high. If you plan on coming to the gorge or maui, you may want to take it easy on big airs, but other than that, you shouldnt have any trouble at all. Do some research and find a good PT in your area and describe exactly what you want to accomplish. A goodd PT will be able to help you get there. Good luck and see you on the water!!!

Thank you for your comments. I still feel I need to hear from someone who is sailing with a knee replacement. I have talked to the local Maui instructors and none are aware of any windsurfers although all know of skiers.

Is there any where I could post a message to see if there is a PT that might have worked with a windsurfer.
Thanks for your help!

Hey Masonrg: When you say knee replacement do you mean a full knee replacement or an ACL reconstuction. I recently (1/99) had ACL surgery and have been in therapy trying to strenthen my leg. I havent sailed yet, but am dying to get back on the water. I believe that I will be able to sail as agressively as in the past, but only time will tell. I currently mountain bike and lift weights for strength training. I also ski alot of moguls. This fall and winter I plan to put my knee to the test. I will let you know how I feel. Good luck.

PS. Have you been prescibed a good custom knee brace. Before my surgery I was using a brace which helped stabalize the knee. I will problably use the brace my first couple of times out until I feel confident. Bad knees suck.

I skied for 20 years with no ACL with no problems. Last year I tore my lateral Meniscus I had both replaced the Meniscus did not work. I tried to Ski but had a lot of pain. I need a total knee to be able to ski but can Windsurf without.
