Funny how the big money gets a personal escort from the Captain but we don't get so much as a call back. |
Welcome to USA 2015. If FDR was still president the whole area would be converted into a city Park. We live instead in the new Gilded Age, and I will be surprised if we will be able to retain access to Candlestick.
We can make some noise (just sent an e-mail) but the last 30 years might be the last for sailing there.

She advised that we attend this meeting to speak directly with the captain.
Meanwhile, she recommended that we also e-mail sfpd.bayview.station@sfgov.org.
So far I've not had luck finding the right person in the parks department.
Can anyone go to the meeting tonight? |
Once again, that meeting is TONIGHT (Tuesday, April 5th) at 6pm. If you can attend, that would be very helpful.
Here is Captain Vaswani's recent post on Twitter. It appears that the big money developers are getting annoyed by the sideshows too:

I can make the first Tuesday meeting with Captain Vaswani in June. All we can do is make our voices heard.
It does make one wonder if the powers-that-be are trying to marginalize community use of the park insidiously. Too much money is at stake, and the windsurfers are on the wrong side of the equation.
On a sardonic note, in the not too distant future the residents and businesses of the proposed Candlestick redevelopment may have to hold their noses when the nasty fumes from across the water waft their way,
but
can no longer witness the wind and water ballet, that we call windsurfing.

If the big money is serious about stopping the side show, they should work with the city and provide funding to build speed bumps in the wide section of the road.

Three of us attended the meeting. We made our case several times, and I believe the message was heard. The captain is new to Bayview but not to San Francisco. He seems genuinely interested in working with the community and cited examples of doing so in the past.
One thing is that he had no idea of the source or impetus of the recent ticketing. He asked if we had any copies of tickets that had been issued. If you have such a ticket, please send a PDF copy to Captain Vaswani at sfpd.bayview.station@sfgov.org.
In addition, here is the newsletter where the new Captain introduces himself:
https://sfpdbayviewstation.wordpress.com/2015/04/29/bayview-newsletter-4-29-15/
This newsletter also has info about the regular community meetings.
I also left word with the Candlestick Park ranger. Their number is 415-671-0145 if you feel like calling them about extending parking lot hours.

Today was the first day of the season for me, and I went to the Stick (with no prior knowledge of the parking troubles there). I arrived around 5, parked by the fence, was in the water around 5:20 and out at 6. As it relates to parking, I was the last windsurfer to leave and while I was changing out of my wetsuit, a squad car was driving around, checking all of the parked cars. The officers stopped by me, asked nicely if I was leaving, I said yes, and they drove away.
Anyway, nothing really happened, but I found the interaction a bit odd. Because the cops weren't giving tickets to any vacant cars. If they weren't ticketing, I'm not sure why they interacted with me. And I don't know what they would have said if I told them I was not leaving.
Anyway, I changed jobs, so with my new commute, 5PM Stick sessions will be my go-to. I hope it does not become problematic.
And dang it was gusty. But great to be out there!

This is a little off topic.
Here is picture of the 49ers stadium at Candlestick Park that was taken today. As you can see, it's slowly but surely coming down.

YippieYo - The cops most likely wanted to ensure you were leaving before dark. Once the sun goes down the wolves come out to feed.

Hi YippieYo -- my experience with Stick is that straight West or WSW at the Stick sensor or to the South or West will not be good. West Northwest at Stick sensor is the best along with NW at the buoys. High clouds over Stick or overcast is also a bad idea. I'm sure everyone has their own Stick formula though. For hot thermal days where no where else is windy, Stick is often the best option especially late afternoon.
If you are going to be sailing this spot a lot, please don't be shy about getting involved to help out. I personally have not heard anything definitive yet about possible changes to parking policy, official map of where parking is allowed, or the prospect of expanded park hours.
Hope to see you out there!
