1. Guideline #2 - do not go out in conditions beyond your skills

2. do not use less than a 6.3 for me that's about 40-60 kph winds

1. Bad idea. How does one learn to manage, let alone enjoy, too much wind without sailing in too much wind?

2. 40-60 kph = 25 - 37 mph winds. That's 4.7 to 2.8 wind for most guys. Have you bypassed #1, or do you just weigh 400 pounds? Very Happy

1. Yes, but it can always be extended. I have no problem enjoying a 6.2 at 25 mph with rare gusts to 37, but at about 30 I'm either running downwind or just gettin' back and forth in one piece. But the latter teaches me two things: a) how to extend my range and b) to rig down sooner next time if I think the wind will last. If I doubt (b), I'll rely on (a) to get me by while everyone else rigs down -- in vain if it backs off again.

2. Only if you sit on my head. Very Happy

I had to think about the original "new rule" when I went windsurfing this morning in 43ºF and light drizzle. It would have kept me from enjoying a great session, so it's definitely a bad rule! I was perfectly warm the entire time, but I still appreciated when the sun came out at the end of the session, and the tide receded so that the slicks became sailable - check https://youtu.be/lvW_yKh37Wo

Looks like a bit of a speed run with virtually no chop. Are you really close to shore, or are you running up close against mud flats?

It's not about winning, losing, or capitulation for me. It's about learning, and it doesn't matter whether the beneficiary is me or the other guy. If you can suggest a better way to advance our skills than pushing our envelopes, please enlighten me. It would make this journey much shorter and simpler.

Back to the speed run. There is no chop or visible wind, but he seems to be offshore a ways? What's the deal?

All windsurfers (even big ones) pretty much have a limit (at least
in this atmosphere), and that limit is around 60MPH winds.
You might enjoy rides in the 40-50MPH range, and you might survive
rides in the 50-60MPH range, but I draw the line
when buildings start to come down.

Nothing wrong with being big, the fastest windsurfers on the planet
are big guys, because they can counter a lot of sail force.
