Zirtab - yep things have changed at Bolsa, rangers kicked us out. Used to love sailing Santa Ana's there ( Yes Spennie, I said it)

Boracay - no vest needed and water temp estimated to be 58-59 degrees ? usually our hands get cold the worst. Last weekend was pretty dang warm, but get some snow on the mountains and the air temps gets cold. Don't ever go there in summer, but during Santa Ana wind (again there it is) season we are always ready to go

Miasibs - Should be easy to find, google Lake Perris SRA (State Park). We sail on the west end of the lake in sail cove. Look for the parking lot with the Sail Cove sign. If you want buttery flat water and speed runs you can launch at the east end of the lake but you can't park next to the waters edge there and with the water being low it's a bit of a carry for your gear to the water

JP- Just have to watch the weather report for the strong Santa Ana wind forecast with northeast winds or east winds. If it's to north the wind gets blocked by the hills. Love to have you sail with us JUST DON"T BRING SPENNIE or it won't blow Laughing

ISO - yep I think they had to rescue some folks that got blown out to sea this weekend.

Good thing they had a "they". It's amazing how many people just assume "they" will come when necessary.

I think there is a rule of thumb that says the further you drive the less likely there will be wind when you get there. Laughing

C St last Sat was the best port tack I've scored there. it was sailable wind in the early AM but too many surfers out until 11:00 AM when it really kicked in and the surfers bailed. Solid side off 4.2m with 3 - 3 FT OH set waves. Then the wind shifted more off shore and became "Jalama like" 10 to 45 up and down on the inside. Brutal, but worth it. By 2:00 PM it was over. A couple guys scored Pt. Hueneme at dawn until it went richter scale, and they came up and joined me at C.

Spennie, I believe you!, but do you have any reference material that talks about the original name being "Santanas"? (Web pages, for example.) That would be interesting.

Here's what a UCLA study of the LA Times archives has to say:

Etymology of the name "Santa Ana winds", as revealed in the archives of the Los Angeles Times newspaper.

I stand corrected, it IS "Santa Anas", thanks to Tony for that article.

According to the article I'm not alone in my (former) belief, and Dallas Raines has been using it lately as well, as did Humphrey Bogart in one of his films (Maltese Falcon, maybe?). Too bad, I like Santanas better!
