I'm looking at going to Hilton Head between Christmas and New Years. Is it worth the hassle of bringing windsurfing gear? What's the scene like there?

I've never sailed HH, but as part of your research:
As with any spot, be sure to check the wind Statistics on iWindsurf. Here's Hilton Head Island:

As you can see from the attached historical stats, and complete December 2013 wind graphs, December delivers some days--particularly with bigger gear. By the way, this referenced weather station isn't perfect, but it's decent, so this info should be somewhat helpful.

No crowds this time of year, 60 degree water temp still. Never sailed there but Tybee across the way is my spot. I would bring gear down.

Geohaye,
Thanks for the intel. I had already looked that up and notice a large discrepancy between the airport and the sensor you noted. I just hate lugging gear to a place with no potential for wave or B&J sailing. I'm thinking of taking one board, a 105L Exocet wave and couple of sails, but if it's only big wide board land then I couldn't be bothered to haul that down.

I'm wondering if I'm better off just bringing some sails and renting a windSUP.

I would trust Brian's recommendation from Tybee: He's a Tybee local, and he suggests bringing gear. That might be the call unless you really don't want the hassle of traveling with your gear (it's understandable)...it might be hard to find a rental windSUP(?). It does sound like the likelihood of great wave or bump & jump conditions at HH during the Xmas-NY period is not high, but it is theoretically possible.
jingebritsen: Reinerehlers is talking about the Hilton Head airport, I believe. (Savannah is indeed a long ways off.) The HH Airport is to the NE of the Hilton Head Island weather station. I think the HH Airport station is known to be not the best quality station, and not located all that well perhaps with some wind shadows, etc. Probably better to look at the Hilton Head Island station -- and also the two Tybee Island stations to get a general flavor of what might be up windwise around Xmas.
Global.iWindsurf.com has the fullest picture of weather stations in the HH-Tybee area:

And the Tybee Island (north end) station is here:

For the Tybee Island (north end) station, historical Stats and December 2013 full-month wind graphs are attached, in case they are helpful!
And, the iWindsurf Tybee South station is here:

Yep, bump and jump in the ocean. But it can get windy! You'll kick yourself if you don't bring gear if it starts coming up. No luck renting sailing gear that I know of. Will probably be able to rent sup board and thère can be some good sup days. Chest high on that last week here on tybee! Better to bring gear and get skunked than wind to show up and no gear.
