Only if their sails were too small or their skills or confidence lacking. I often hear people say "I can't pinch because my board is too small", when their problem is lack of power. At 20 pounds heavier, 10-15 liters smaller board, and another meter of power, I have no problem flying upwind or running almost dead downwind, as I had to just two days ago in winds averaging in the 40s and gusting much higher on 67 liters. Given sufficient power, moping is a choice.

Amen, I've heard Peterson say the rush is dealing with the magnitude
of forces, same as your comment. 28 to 48, sounds like sweet 3.7 to me.

our sport is about achieving an equilibrium of forces. might seem frightfully fast for some until one adapts? figuring out how to let the right gear run and hanging on is the most fun for me in the ditch.

Yup. While I enjoy what I call "sweet" or "just nicely powered" sailing (planing most of the time in steady wind with just enough power to play with the terrain), the memorable days are those in which I occasionally HAVE to pinch up or run downwind because maneuvering is dangerous in the bigger gusts if I want to plane in most of the lulls. The BEST days, of course, are those very rare days -- one or two per season -- when it's so steady that I can maneuver safely on that ragged upper edge of power all day, ripping up- and down-wind by choice, not for survival. Thus my choice of a 5.7 in John's scenario: manageable overkill when it's averaging 32, planing power when it's averaging low 20s, and sitting on my board relaxing when it's averaging below 20. Whether I'd switch to a 6.2 or a 5.2 after a while depends on the wind speed distribution.
