It is complicated.
Here is a study of what is changing.

Changes of the prevailing trade winds over the islands of Hawaii and the North Pacific,
Garza, J. A., P.-S. Chu, C. W. Norton, and T. A. Schroeder (2012),
J. Geophys. Res., 117, D11109, doi:10.1029/2011JD016888.

Yah, there is room to worry.

In the late eighties through the 90's I would go to maui a few times a year for a couple weeks each time; sometimes for a month. My experience is that now the trades are less frequent. The study posted confirms my personal experience; it says NE trades are less frequent and easterly winds are more frequent. From my experience Easterly trades are a pain in the ass. As they rip on the far outside and are extremely gusty and inconsistent inside at sites like Kanaha Hookipa and Sprecks. This is because from that direction you are sailing in the wind shadow of the island itself on the inside in the impact zone. Still hoping to get some wave sailing in this fall on Maui however Crying or Very sad
