I saw someone sailing at treasure island on labor day without a wetsuit. It seems crazy to me considering how cold the water feels to me and I use a 4/3 suit. Why would someone do that?

Some people just have better peripheral circulation than others.
I have met a few of them, but they are outliers in the distribution of
normal humans.

A few people do it regularly. From a long term survival point of view it is sheer stupidity, but ... how many of us have been stranded in the water for more than 2 hours? And 2-3 hours is probably survivable. Shocked More ... you'll probably die Shocked

Maybe he forgot his wetsuit and really wanted to sail.
I'll never forget when JP forgot his wetsuit at waddell. He went out anyways, duct taped up his levis, got a few waves, then left soaking wet.

this is the guy with the graffiti covered box van and he always does that, or sails with the suit gathered around his waist. I understand a number of folks have tried to talk some sense to him. I don't get; whereas I can't wait to get the stinking suit off when I come off the water, I have no discomfort from it while sailing. And it is has been mighty warm out on the bay lately and it's tempting to go with a shorty, etc. so if you must, stay close to shore in that case.

the water temps have been higher this year than they have been. around 60F outside the gate. inside the bay it's in the high 60s, redwood city is currently 74!

Victor is right about it being warmer. I was sailing Coyote on Labor Day with boardshorts and a rash guard because it was so warm. Didn't go beyond the second buoy. Actually I've sailed about 6 or 7 times this year without the wetsuit.

I haven't put on more than a 3/2 so far this year
Had to use a shorty a couple of times.
I can't see going without rubber here and it does give
you some leg guard effect if you have a full suit.
