Working on your jibe is going to be a lot harder in the open ocean, and you'll probably need that skill more than the ability to jibe in flat water.

Going fast as in speed sailing or slalom?

Either way, I could use a training buddy! Hit me up!

Do whatever forces you to work harder. It's determination and effort that improves your skills. Flat water doesn't sound like much of a workout.

If I want to improve my skills should I be sailing flat water or open ocean chop? Thanks!

Careful, NW. This group doesn't want to hear that. They claim it's a snobbish, elitist, putdown indicating a one-track mind stuck on some mythical one true version of sailing these things. I say it's all good if it is fun or if it advances one's goals. Certainly it all adds skills.

As a flatwater board sailor I agree wave sailing is a different sport. But both of them are windsurfing. Single handed dinghy sailing and America's Cup racing are different sports but both of them are sailing.

I started another thread on "How many windsurfing sports?"

Flat water can be anything you want it to be.
You can cruise around sailing semi fast doing 5 mile reaches, relax and looking around.
Or, you could be the fastest in your pond, reach no farther than 200 years, and attempt your best ever jibes time and time again.
You will be exhaused in 20 minutes doing the later.

DELCARPENTER: I started another thread on "How many windsurfing sports?"

I believe it would be windsurfing disciplines as windsufing itself is the sport and there are many disciplines within the sport.

Is the average sailor that inept? I know you're not talking about yourself. Shocked

Inept....
96% of windsurfer's today cannot reach 200 yards, jibe and do it again for even 3 minutes. 20 minutes, would have you doing at least 40 full planing jibes in a row.
NONE of you can do that, and neither can I. Tyson Poor can.

Hmm. OK. Guess I hang with a different crowd. Sad

Edit for info:

I measured it today. 25 seconds. If we're just mowing the lawn you gotta jibe at 25 seconds. If the swell is good it's more than that. So,, averaging at least 2 per minute. I made one reach about as slow as I could go, 55 seconds.
