I have been in NYC for few years and originally from Puerto Rico. Now looking to get back to windsurfing. Any recommendations on the windsurfing scene near NYC?...my email....paltieri11@mac.com

Some people windsurf in Brooklyn, though I'm not familiar with that scene (the primary launch is Plumb Beach). Many New Yorkers sail on Long Island (you need a car to make that work.) There is an excellent forum used my Long Island windsurfers:
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/LongIslandWindsurfer/info

You can find out where people are sailing on any given day...there are dozens of good launches and locations depending on the wind direction, the type of sailing you want to do, and your skill set.

You have to "apply" to join...do it, you'll be accepted within a day.

For a map of windsurfing locations in the area check out the Long Island Windsurfing Map:

http://peconicpuffin.typepad.com/the_peconic_puffin/2006/12/windsurfing_pec.html

which is part of my blog.

There are no windsurfing shops near the city. The closest (and the one I use) is in Southampton, at Hampton Watersports:

http://www.hamptonwatersports.com

which is in fact a great shop with excellent service and information.

Good luck...hope to meet you on the water some day!

-Michael (I sail in the Peconic area out east.)

For current wind speeds, Plumb Beach is right here:

The iWindsurf Breezy Point weather station is hugely popular:

Thanks so much for all your feedback! I ended up finding out last night that Plumb Beach looks like a pretty decent spot. Need to check the one on Breezy Point. And i agree with the painful fact that i might need to buy a car. Which might end up being a good move if i want to try some local surfing spots as well.

I saw this one kite surfing site, and the spot caught my attention. It seems to be flat water, and from looking at their pics the wind seems pretty decent.

http://nykitecenter.com/ ...Looks like a good spot to practice freestyle. Back home growing up i did a lot of one design and slalom. Now looking for freestyle.

If i was going to buy one board, preferably freestyle/wave, and sail(s). Any recommendations? I am 5'10, 178lbs. I am trying to stay away from course racing boards to focus on short-boards. To improve my board handling in particular.

Pablo

p.s. and great links you guys gave me. The peconic site is super good.
