I'm trying to mount one of those expensive auto accessory SUP boards to the roof of my van like everyone else here in the Gorge. What kind of silicone is best for the thru-bolts? |

Napa sells a silicone called The Right Stuff by 3m. Once it dries you can remove the bolts and save the weight. It should not blow off around town. |

Mulekick84: Um, don't think starfish got the joke.
In the early 60s they used to sell a surfboard tail that would bolt into your trunk so you could look like Surfer Boy all the time. I swear, it's true! Don't know how many they sold, if any.
On the reality side, I've been a builder for over 35 years, and I'd like to share this piece of information: Silicone blows, and I wouldn't use it for anything except a shower door. The silicone itself is pretty strong, but the crap won't stay stuck to hardly anything. I recommend you use a good urethane caulk for your high-performance outdoor needs, and DAP Dynaflex 230 for everything else.. _________________ Spennie the Wind Junkie

I can't resist a continuation of this. JC Whitney used to sell fake cell phones, so that you could look impressive tooling around in your car.
The world is a strange place, yes?

I remember the fake cell phone antennas, they also sold fake sunroofs.
The SUP has indeed become the auto accessory of choice in many areas. When I was in (on?) the OBX back in the spring, just about every car, truck, van had an SUP on the roof. It was kinda funny at the beach watching "Dad" paddle downwind on his SUP at great speed, looking like he was putting alot of effort into it (seemingly being hero Dad), while "Mom" played with the kids along the shore. The funny part was when "Dad" turned around and had to paddle upwind. I saw more than one or two Dads actually paddle in to the beach and walk back upwind.
Here on LI, I am seeing more and more of them on roofs of cars, trucks, and vans.

I guess I'm out of touch; I carry mine inside my Outback. |
