Digging around in the attic, I came across my trusted copy of Ernstfried Prade's Complete Wndsurfing Guide (1982). A highlight of the book is the "beach start" that saves oneself from having to carry gear to the water's edge. "If there is enough sand you will be able to whizz along the beach for 30 or so meters. Since this is only possible by bracing the front foot on the joint, you should always wear gym shoes". Should have paid closer attention to learning the basics when I started out and saved myself countless trips over the dunes.

The main thing I learned from that it that it's easier to turn my iMac upside down than to navigate an electronically inverted image. Smile

For long dune portages I just make two trips. I take the board, leave it on the beach right side up and nose pointing into the wind, walk back and get the rig, then plug and play. Afterwards I run the process in reverse. A little more time but a HELLOVALOT less work, especially since we can carry a board in one hand and can carry a rig in one hand ... even both at once, unattached, in some scenarios.

Who knew. But man, that would be hell on the stone covered beaches I visit, especially with a monster reaper weeder on the back. I guess his article must have been back in the day when the rear fin wasn't too significant, and you could later down the centerboard?

See what we lost going to lighter boards? An original windsurfer had so much plastic on the outside that a few stones and shells would not bother it. Pierre demonstrated that nicely at the ECWF Long Island when he beached his windsurfer on the rail many times. I like old boards.

The illustration's board graphics lead me to the older early 80's Mistral regatta boards like the Comp Lite, and the ever popular regatta board the Superlight, with their spring loaded, fold back skeg. When you hit anything, and I mean anything, the skeg folded back. Not into the board, just back along the hull. You could have beachstarted that way due to the board's rocker.

There was also an early windsurf video that showed some Maui guys riding down the wet sand fin first into and through the shore break saving themselves a pounding.

Same trick with modern gear? Fin first, on someone else's board. Rolling Eyes

That is a great blog post, especially since you back up what you are saying with the hard data. Pretty cool. Agree on enjoying old boards ... as well as the new. It is the combination that I like.

Nah, not specifically. I just like switching between equipment ... Stubby / long, non-cambered / cambered, windsurf / windsup, etc. The different feels are fun.
