Actually, I've used socket head screws and Allen wrenches, and I found them less easy to work with, particularly since it's tough to find Allen wrenches that don't rust. Actually I find it hard to beat a good P3 Phillips head screwdriver as a trusty tool that's both quick and effective, and it's much easier to find in the van. Also, once you have a good fit with a cavity fin, it's pretty hard to strip out the Phillips head screws. Many that I'm using are well over 10 years old.

Regarding tapping out M6 to 1/4-20 threads, I have to agree with you. It's best to have the correct screws. That said, Mike Zajicek tapped out a couple of my fins to 1/4-20, and I've never had any problems with them. Needless to say though, the fit between the box and the finbase is correct, so the tightening process is quick and easy. You only strip-out screws if the tightening process is tough to accomplish.
