I only read about it and some people swear by it, while others say that it can rip off the mast track because of the high forces generated in a catapult. I chose not to try it because of that. |

I used one for a while when I was starting out and prone to getting catapulted.
It worked well, and I'm suprised they didn't catch on more. I've heard people claim that if you land just so, the deviator becomes a fulcrum with which the mast base gets leveraged from the board. But I took some hard spills and that never happened. And it seems unlikely, given that, by design, the mast immediately deflects one direction or the other. That said, I'd go with a two-bolt base, as recommended.
The only drawback I found is that it can make it a little harder to reorient your sail for a waterstart. But that only happened a couple of times, because normally you're bringing the mast/sail around the stern of the board. In any event, the workaround is to simply push down on the nose so that it dunks under and around. |

I pad my board noses. SEARCH the forum using the key words <pad nose NSI >, check the Search for all Terms box, enter isobars as poster, and check Posts instead of Topics. You'll find five threads on this. |

I scrape off the nose guards on the boards I own that have them. Haven't been launched in over 15 years, but I got a new to me board waiting for it to happen, since I scraped the nose guard off.
Working at shops around here, seen 3 cases of aluminum mast base dented, and one of carbon fiber cracked due to Deviator. Better than snapping the nose off your board for sure. My test sample was maybe 15 sailors who used it.
Kinda like your car. Better to avoid the catapult than add accesories to lessen the damage. Just pump your sail and have your hands forward when you're not at full speed.
Forwards can cause nose damage, under rotated.
As can hard lay down jibes on boards with ears forward of the mast track. |

I'm 300 pounds and I regularly sail gear that would kill most people. I get launched pretty regularly. This year during the Lake Isabella Speed Week I took an over the handlebars crash at 28 knots on damn near formula gear.
My thoughts are thus.
Padding is best. Hands down. Do it yourself. Glue 4" of foam pad on the nose.
The Deviator will screw up your board. |

Pryde t-boom nose pad with dakine pad over it because the t-boom pad has good coverage over the boom nose but the velcro is insufficient to keep it attached, the dakine pad has lot's of velcro but insufficient padding, together they work perfectly. Then a hard to find ION mast pad, a silvery thing that pads the mast below the boom. Together all three provide all the protection one could ever need, I've had some pretty good launches where I heard the padding smack the board with a whump and I was sure there would be damage but nothing. |

Makes tacking difficult on smaller boards.

Deviator:
Positives - Can protect the nose of boards from boom hits. Inexpensive.
Negatives - Impedes range of base location. Can rip out or break mast boxes when a great deal of force is applied -usually with large sails and boards of lighter construction. Is a toe-breaker. _________________ Support Your Sport. Join US Windsurfing!
